X X Pokemon you actually find useful

Those Pokemon that have a supposedly useless moveset you find useful.

For me it's Gengar with Hex/Focus Blast - Hex charges Focus Blast really quickly, and even without Stab Focus Blast (combined with Gengars attack stats) does a lot of damage against the usual 'Normal' gym fillers. Yes he'll die fairly quickly, but can make a real dent in a gym quickly (useful against the Golden Raspberry droppers or if you're short of time) and has very low Potion costs.

What are your favourite 'useless' Pokemon?

I happened to caught a high level Gastly and evolved it into a FB Genger. I agree it's a quick sabotager, but it's also a revive burner. It could be a pain for players with no storage for regular revives (like me).

Personally I think there are way more useful XX pokemon for the old gym system, where to do training efficiently there are many options. After then most pokemons are left into awkward position as they are just dex filler or trade fodder.

I like double fighting Poliwrath, double ice Lapras, but they are still fairly relevant and don't quite qualified for X X pokemon as you defined. Perhaps some non-elite fighting type mons like Primeape, Hitmons could have a use in gym battles.

Not sure if it counts as "useless" but I have a perfect Granbull that I powered up because I like to power up my perfect mons. I actually end up using it pretty frequently.

I also have a perfect Primeape that I use way more often than one would think considering I have a few powered up Machamps and one Hariyama.

It's basically a worse Gardevoir by a sizeable amount. A Granbull with Snarl/Play Rough could see some niche use in Cloudy weather against a double dragon set but that's about it. I'd only consider it if I caught a L35 Snubbull with killer IVs and wasn't already drowning in better ghost and dragon-type counters.

Makes sense. A little suprised that Bite wouldn't be that useful considering what it does for Gyarados as a mewtwo counter

Bite is Gyarados's only fast move that deals SE damage against Mewtwo, that's a little different.

I'm guessing Snarl's higher EPS lets Granbull use Play Rough more often, which is where the big damage points are coming from. Similar to the Shadow Ball sets for Mewtwo; In a vacuum pairing it with Confusion has higher DPS but against targets that resist psychic and are weak to ghost the Psycho Cut set comes out on top.

The difference here is that Gyarados has 25 more attack power and considerably higher bulk when compared to Granbull as a pseudo-dark attacker, and Gyarados isn't the most stellar option in that scenario to begin with.

Not "useless", but Lugia is described as a "useful in some situations, but not great" pokemon, but I maxed mine because, as someone who focuses on solo raids, my Lugia is my absolute VIP.

(semi sarcastically) Bite/Crunch Tyrantar, because everyone seems to think If a tyrantiar cant get Smackdown anymore its trash

All seriousness, dragon pulse ampharos, good against those water type defenders, and dragonpulse gives it some thing against dragonite. Or ho-oh, good against agaisnt gardevoir with steel wing and looks colorful too

Speaking of Dragon Pulse, I still have several Dragonite and Gyarados possessing that move, which makes me think, will double Dragon Gyarados viable for Ray's return? There could be multiple cases for double Dragon Gyarados though, Dragon Breath/Dragon Tail + Twister/Dragon Pulse/Outrage.

Outrage would probably be better than dragon pulse for that, but rock types have STAB and ice types have double super effectiveness + stab, so they might be better

From a pure DPS standpoint, Outrage would be better in both of their cases. I'd keep it though for -=S T Y L E=- points.

To be honest, I think you're fooling yourself as to how useful that Gengar is. With no STAB on focus blast, and hex being double resisted, you're not getting very good DPS to go with Gengar's fragility. As a proxy for its DPS against normal types, note that Gengar doesn't even make the top 24 counters by time-to-win against Snorlax raid boss, which means it ranks behind mons like fighting Poliwrath, Primeape, the Hitmons, and numerous mons that do only neutral damage.

So the real question is which mons are suboptimal but "cool" or fun to use. For me, DB/B Kingdra and DT/B Milotic against dragons are in that category.

Clefable. In gym sweeping or against weak raid bosses like a-Exeggutor, I think it performs equally, maybe slightly better than Grandevior, but that is due to its bulk.

Rhydon, all movesets. I have an army of them

That's like an army of real "slowpoke". Strong, but hits really slow.
