Would like help for an attack squad

Right now I have:
Flareon 1003 CP, Fire Spin/Overheat
Vaporeon 983 CP, Water Gun/Hydro Pump
Jolteon 948 CP, Thunder Shock/Thunderbolt
Arcanine 930 CP, Fire Fang/Fire Blast
Pupitar 803 CP, Rock Smash/Crunch
Chansey 512 CP, Zen Headbutt/Dazzling Gleam

This crew usually wins 1 battle. Any suggestions? Keep it and power it up? Drop something? I have a Seaking 578 CP, and a Rhyhorn 462 CP. I'm level 20, and very new, so all help is appreciated. The Pupitar is currently my buddy.

EDIT: I guess I should mention I have ZERO interest in holding a gym. I just want to fight them, and every gym near me is Yellow.

What level are you?? Walk w/ Pupitar!(Very nice Pupitar btw) The important thing is don't power anything up yet!! :) My key to the lower levels is to obtain as much Eevee, Pidgey, Weedle, Hoot-hoot, Zubat, and whatever common spawn candies as possible and use most of them as Xp gainers you want to level up asap and evolve high cp/lvl eevees along the way! :) awesome stuff seeing new trainers.

+Editing because I forgot to add farm Magikarp (If you live near water it's 100 catches provide you transfer every Magikarp you catch or around 50 if you use Pineap berries) Gyarados will prob be your best attacker. All of his/her move sets are pretty solid for general attacking.

Don't have a Magikarp or a Gyrados, nor anything that evolves into them. I do have a Dratini.

;) That's a great start (How many candies)! Pupitar & Dratini are a great start man! Have you checked the the appraisal on it? In any case man! You have to seek out more high CP Eevees, Rhyhorns, Pidgeys (Pidgeot is a pretty solid attacker at your level), Exegguttes, and other Pokemon that are common that lead to strong attackers!

I've read in many places that a great moveset is better than IV. I know the IV on all of my team. The Arcanine is 98IV. The Vaporeon is 64IV. The others are in between those values. Does IV change which ones I keep? Again, I am looking to fight against gyms, not help them. I have no interest in conquering one (other than for the experience), and putting someone in it to get coins. I want to fight. Gyms that aren't "my team" are the only way for me to do that. So why would I want a gym to be my color?

You have good movesets on them but they are just low level, just look to level up so you can find higher level mons otherwise even if they are are good Iv and good movesets they won't be a match for higher level mons you find in gyms

You can still battle gyms that are your color. It's called "training," but it really is the same thing. When you are training, as opposed to battling enemy gyms, you get extra credit for using lower-CP attackers. Collecting coins will help you to advance in the game, and as you get to higher levels, you will be able to acquire stronger pokemon for battling. Many higher level players such as myself (level 35) actually prefer to train (battle) friendly gyms, because of the challenge of beating higher-CP defenders with our lower-CP attackers. Also, levelling up friendly gyms and adding pokemon to them is a more reliable way of collecting free coins over time, which makes it easier to advance in the game.

One more thing, as a lower-level player, when you train against friendly gyms, the defending pokemon will have their level (and therefore their CP) lowered to your level, making it a little easier for you to battle them.

The Eevee evolutions are the easiest strong pokemon to get your hands on. If you can get some mons in the 1500-2000 CP range, you'll be able to put up more of a fight, and maybe even completely take over some lower-level gyms. So, definitely catch as many Eevees as possible, and evolve them.

Another good way to get some strong pokemon is to farm nests for evolvable pokemon. In other words, find nests, and go there frequently to catch as many of certain pokemon as you can. The Silph Road Nest Atlas is a crowd-sourced resource for finding nests near you (nests are places where a certain pokemon will appear very frequently for a few weeks, until the nests rotate and switch to other pokemon). Some examples of good pokemon to farm are Rhyhorn and Exeggcute, both of which evolve into very strong battlers (Rhydon and Exeggutor, respectively).

If you aren't already familiar with how different pokemon types match up, try to learn some of the basic matchups, so that you can use your best pokemon for a given defender. For example, fire pokemon are very weak against water pokemon, so even a weaker water pokemon will do very well against a strong fire pokemon. Similarly, fire pokemon are strong against grass pokemon, and grass pokemon are strong against water pokemon. The more of these matchups you can learn, the better, because you will have a lot more success if you pick favorable matchups. If certain pokemon are common in gyms in your area, learn which pokemon are best for attacking those defenders. Even some of the strongest pokemon have certain weaknesses that can easily be exploited; for example, Dragonites are very weak to ice attacks, and Gyarados is very weak to electric attacks. Make sure you are picking your own attacking team each time with a view to favorable matchups, rather than just accepting the default lineup that the app chooses for you.

I hope some of this helps, and welcome to gym battling!

Apparently I am missing something. I asked to keep/drop/level up each of these: (now with IV)
Flareon 1003 CP, Fire Spin/Overheat, 78 IV, level 12.5
Vaporeon 983 CP, Water Gun/Hydro Pump, 64 IV, level 11.5
Jolteon 948 CP, Thunder Shock/Thunderbolt, 82 IV, level 12.5
Arcanine 930 CP, Fire Fang/Fire Blast, 98 IV, level 11.5
Pupitar 803 CP, Rock Smash/Crunch, 84 IV, level 18
Chansey 512 CP, Zen Headbutt/Dazzling Gleam, 82 IV, level 13

Do I keep them all and level them up? Do I drop 1 or 2? I want this to be an attack squad.

Keep them for now, but don't power any of them up. By the time you hit the higher levels and you will be able to catch even more powerful Pokemon with no stardust investment. Stardust is the limiting factor in the game, so you want to save it until you start seeing level 30 wild Pokemon, which is the highest level a wild Pokemon will spawn at.

Save your stardust and any rare Pokemon candy until you get to level 30. Only evolve pidgeys, caterpies, weedles, rattatas, sentrets, and ledybas for xp. Save up candy until you can evolve 85 or more, then use a lucky egg and evolve them all while it is active.

Hope that helps.

Everyone will have their own personal preference but if I had that 98 FF/FB Arcanine when I was lvl 20 it would be getting powered up to my max and then continued as my trainer level increased.

A strong pokemon like Arcanine with ridic high IV and best ms doesn't come along very often and imo it's worth every bit of stardust he will have to put into it and also it's one of his originals that grew up with him which is worth something to some people. :)

I wouldn't power up the arcanine, since arcanine is no longer the best fire attacker. Flareon is better.

Most of the listed Pokemon are too low of a level to power up, in my opinion. As they are, they can make good prestigers for gyms. You might eventually want to evolve, and then power up the pupitar if it turns into a good tyranitar, so long as you don't find a better larvitar/pupitar in the meantime.

OK, so here is what I would do. Do NOT power these up. As a rule of thumb I do not keep mons with IV below 82. I would not keep below 90% if I could get more of them, which is extremely difficult for me. It was a VERY LONG TIME when I thought one to have to live in the US in order to get high IV mons, really. But then I caught 2 perfect ones, sadly cursed by bad moveset upon evolution. I also had seen 2 100% egg hatches on my sons account, again not in my range yet :-) HOWEVER there is an exception here - Eevees are not sth I get many, and I manage to caught some high level Vaps - the are never to get send as they never have gotten any dust. I have only one Flareon and 2 Jolteon, alle 3 below 80% and not their best moveset too, but still not to be send. You get what I mean? Keep it what you can attack with and if you don't have good IVs watch the moves: like your Vap - keep him - best moveset & high HP are always welcome.
If you can invest in a lucky egg get some, as already mentioned catch as many Pidgey etc. and evolve with lucky egg, this will help you to level up quicker.
This squad you have now, will be helpful later, when you get to level 30 and start to train gyms for prestige and I know for sure the time will come for you as it does for everyone :-)
So keep your dust now, hatch eggs and power up hgh IV attackers, and defenders when you change your mind. Many of us do only the later.
Good Luck!

If you want more enjoyment and progress now, power up Vaporeon, Jolteon and Flareon because yours have the best movesets and they are the best attackers of their type (and Vape is one of the best overall).
Regarding progress, why not adding your pokemons in 2-3 gyms and collect? You will earn stardust this way, and also coins. And will recover the dust spent now to bring those 3 to lvl 21.5.
If you have sturdust just for one of them, do the Vape :). Then Jolteon, only after that Flareon. With a lvl 20 Vape you can try beating everything from bottom of a gym, except a higher lvl Blissey. Flareon will not pass Vapes and Rhydons. Jolteon is extraordinaty vs Gya, ok vs. Vape and a lost caouse with others :).

I know I did power up when I was low level and I battled high level gyms when I was lvl 20, with a Vaporeon a lot weaker than yours (water pulse instead of Hydro pump) as my main attacker. I don't regret it, and right now at lvl 34 is the first time I have 400k saved stardust.
