Who would you buddy up with?

Snorlax - 1866 CP, 79% IV, 3000 Power Up, Lick/Earthquake

Dragonite - 729 CP, 92% IV, 800 Power Up, Steel Wing/Dragon Pulse

I did some rough math and the Dragonite would take over 400km to fully power up (lvl 26). The Snorlax would be around 175km. I can do the Dragonite in around 3 months. I guess my question is, is Dragonite worth a little over double the effort?

Personally I will not stay with the same buddy... I know I will change it depending on which candies I desperately need at the time... I have a few that only need one dang hard to get candy to evolve to a new pokemon I don't have... If I had to choose between the two options you have and would stay with it till the end it would have to be the dragonite... With my luck I would find a better snorlax after 2 months of powering the lesser one up...

Personally I went for the 1 km ones that would create new entries in my Pokédex.

Yesterday I started out with a decent IV Pikachu and 41 candy, when I got home I could evolve it into Raichu (turned out to be 93 % IV, 13-15-14).

My current buddy is a Geodude, it should take about 65 km for me to get candy enough to evolve to Golem, unless I catch a few more during that time.
