which one should i power up?

which one is good for gym defender? atm i have 300k dust. and enough candies to power up both to the max.

Rhydon 91-93% IV
Mud Slap/Stone Edge Vaporeon 82%
Water Gun/ Hydro Pump

i also still have a good iv eevee. but is the name trick still work? i have 87% and 96%. if its still work should i evolve it to vaporeon or espeon?

The name trick won't work if you already used the name once.
What's the current level of each of them?
Are you looking for an attacker? A Defender? Or just something that sits high on gyms?

If it's the third option, Rhydon, if it's the second, neither are particularly good, but again higher Max CP would give Rhydon the edge. If it's an attacker, deffinitely vaporeon.

thanks for the reply. the vaporeon is level 20 and rhydon is level 23. I'm at level 32, need 7k xp to 33.

It all depends on what you want out of them, both are good enough to power up, I'd go for the Vaporeon, but that's because:
a) I have terrible luck with eevolutions, I have only 3 vaporeons, while I have like 30 jolteon/flareon
b) Vaporeon is a fully evolved pokemon while Rhydon isn't, and your vaporeon has probably the best moveset (even defensively as most people get hit in the face with HP because of the low dodge window)
c) Rhyhorn is very common in my area, chances are I can get one closer to lvl 30 (sitting on like 1.5K candy)

But I can see someone else going for the Rhydon because they are not very common in their area, they need something to put in gyms or already have other good vaporeons.

Rhydon will be the bigger defender. Vaporeon is somehow harder to beat, but with a decent dragonite or Exeggutor or Venussaur, not a big problem too. So I would go for high CP and power Rhydon.

The name-trick works once for each name.

well i already have a 100% iv rhydon but atm its on the gym but with crappy moveset, rock smash/ megahorn. so your answer is i power up the rhydon instead of vaporeon?

Rhydon with this moveset is the best defensive. Vaporeon with this moveset is OK for defense, while being the best attacking.

The name trick only works once for each type of eeveelution. Don't waste a name on the 87%. If you haven't used Rainer, Sakura, or Tamao yet, do so on the 96% (in that order of preference).
Off the cuff, Rhydon should be the priority for dust, since it has higher IV, an A defensive set, is more rare, and is a better defender.

i did it all the name trick.. unfortunately my gen 2 eevee didn't have a good iv. :( so rhydon it is then? thanks man.

On the other hand, using dust on Rhydon might be a big risk when you evolve him in gen 4, as he might get a bad moveset then. And with a gym rework on the pipeline, CP might turn out to be irrelevant when that rolls in.

Personally I would say Rhydon is a terrible gym defender and is almost an invite to take a gym down. With so many strong water attackers it is suicide. In comparison a vaperon may not have the same cp but the candies are much easier to come across and will IMHO make the gym stronger so more likely to last for a while before falling.
Would you rather attack a gym of 10 vapes or 10 Rhydons all of the same level?

That depends a great deal on how many of my top vaporeons are in gyms at the time. I do have to agree that, with a full roster, 10 Rhydons would be slightly easier.

Rhydon is a miserable defender. It's high CP gives it good gym position, but they go down real fast in the face of any decent water attacker. Decent water attackers are overwhelmingly abundant in the current meta. Rhydon is one of those defenders you put in when you don't like your local teammates - when gym shavers are more of a concern than the other team, so you need the CP for gym position.

Vaporeon is undoubtedly a more effective defender, and while countered by grass, the grass type attackers are weaker and less abundant than good water attackers to use vs rhydon.

I'd do the Vaporeon first then Rhydon. Vap will double as a defender or an attacker. If you don't have him in a gym you can use him to attack as well.

Stone edge can be a major PITA tho. While Rhydons are soft like butter Stone Edge can do some major damage, especially with all the lag/bug problems with dodging these days.

I would also use the name trick and get a 96% Espeon.
