Which one to power up as a strong defender

Hi all,

I have a Dragonite (CP695, IV97.8%, SW/DP) and a Lapras (CP1629, IV88.9%, Ice shard/Blizzard). Based on your experience, which one is a better defender?

Lapras hands down. Dragonite has double weakness to Ice so it can be easily countered. There is no good counter for Lapras however.

You are right, but that's about it... there are quite a few Pokemon attackers that can lace into Dragonite, but Lapras are susceptible to Arcanine and not much else.

I drop multiple perfect Dragonite's into gyms and they don't last long (CP 3504).

I have a couple Lapras' with much lower CP and IV and they seem to last longer.

Not sure how this helps you, as there are SO many factors that go into this including but not limited to your area, prominent attackers in your area, access to stops for potions/revives, etc.

I will tell you personally though, when I see a gym with high or a lot of Dragonite's I go right after it no matter the level. There is something about taking out a tower of them that is so gratifying.

Good luck!

LOL. Do you live in San Francisco by any chance near Sunset area? Are you the one taking down my Dragonites? When I put dragonites(3361-3072), don't last long. But, any other mons stay longer, such as Lapras and Snorlax.

Lol yeah man, that's exactly my experience. I don't even put my Dragonite's in gyms now unless they will be the 10th mon. Just feels like people go after them in my area.

But no, I'm located in Southern California. Work and play in Santa Monica and Santa Clarita (Magic Mountain). Feel for you bro, kind of. :p Good luck!

I did go up to San Francisco about a month or so ago for work, and it was AWESOME! Lures galore and caught a bunch of high IV mons during that week that I was there. There were a ton of Dratini's, Magikarp's, Bulbasaur's, and Pikachu's that I farmed the hell out of.

There were definitely more Dragonite towers in San Francisco than even here in So Cal. Like a LOT more. I'm guessing due to the number of Dratini's that spawn up there people just have to have high CP ones to even hold a spot in a gym. I was taking out tower after tower in Sausalito.

I personally see gyms dominated by Dragonites as an insult to the art of building a proper defense. Same with Gyarados. You can just feel that every single one of the defenders did not care about the overall stability of the gym, but only about securing a high slot for himself. When I encounter such an eyesore, I take the time to tear it down to the last level.

Lapras is better but Dragonite with this moveset is really good too plus it will always be on top of the gym.
Power them both to your max

Noone reacting to his dragonites low cp and the amount of candies it'll take to power him up?

It's 98 % iv and with best def moveset, really sharp...
Though yeah...it's much better as an attacker with Dragon Breath...

Lapras.. No counters.. And ice beam strikes fast.. Blizzard to me easyer to dodge. I like to use my machamp against her... But i love machamp, and people dont like him because of karate chop. They dont realise cross chop is the top dps in game to balance the weak karatechop

Forgor to say i have 2 hatched lapras.. Here in brazil they are CRAZY rare.. Ice shard and ice beam is my best one at 2700+cp but i never use him as a defender as he is my main dragonite killer. U should use yours to attack dragonites

It is the top DPS but only because it is so fast. You still need to recharge it, which weakens his overall, blended DPS across KC and CC. He does look like a badass though with those four guns.

Yeah i know.. But I really like him.. Maybe because he is cool.. But he can takes snorlax and lapras down if it haves high cp. If u pick up his dodge timming, he is great AND cool

Thanks for all the suggestion! I live by a dratini nest so it is not a big problem for me to harvest enough dratini candies. On the other hand I have been walking my lapras since it was hatched so I think I have enough candies to boost its CP to 2k+.

Since I am in a dragonite-rich area, I think I will go with the lapras.

So my Dragonite at 2700+ and same moveset as yours (not as good IV's though - nice!) usually goes in to gyms near or at top position, but doesn't seem to matter - still gets kicked out more often then my Lapras with about 1700 CP, who usually ends up near the bottom of 52K gyms - but seems to last a lot longer!

I personally have multiple options to wipe out Dragonite, but Lapras is tough - miss a dodge and even my strongest Electric attackers can't finish her off by himself.

Bottom line, my priorities now are:
- walk with Lapras to max - my best defender!
- next up will be Snorlax
- Finally will be Dragonite.

If dust is your limit and you need high CP mon to get into a gym you can camp out at, then go with Dragonite, otherwise Lapras is superior (IMO).
