there is no Dex number?

should I just ignore them if I don't need Ditto candy? I don't understand the point here.

As more is revealed closer to LGPE's release it could play a bigger role.
For now they just turn into Dittos and are a marketing tool as warpig1648 said. They definitely have people talking about the switch games much more than kiddie moves like Buzzy Buzz or Floaty Fall did. EDIT: I should say, people are talking about it more positively. With each new "reveal" and teaser trailer I've noticed a growing number of people being critical of LGPE.
On Monday I got a field research "Catch a Ditto: 10 ultra balls." Normally I would just drop any "Catch a Dittto" research because it is too reliant on random chance. However, I knew I would be able to see any Meltan-Ditto pop-up on sightings so I held onto it. Saw and caught a "Meltan" a few hours later.
