What the move rebalance tells us about investing
The late July update told us that Niantic can change move pools and move power;
The ditto patch told us that Niantic can change base stats;
The gen 2 update told us that Niantic can change move cool down and add new better moves;
Therefore, aside from typing, Niantic basically can change everything fundamental in gym meta. We could even expect they change the damage formula in the future.
So, what do all this tell us?
Don't transfer mon with non-repeative move set. Take Exeggutor. Confusion + Solar Beam is the best DPS move but it is now unobtainable. I throwed away some, now I regret. Same for Shadow Claw+Shadow Ball Gengar (back then Shadow ball was trash). If you already have a high Tier mon with best move set, don't evolve all others hoping to get more; save some high IV per-evolved for the next rebalance. I evolved some unnecessary Eggs to get more Z+Sob but now I regret. Same for Dratini, Magicarp, Eevee, etc. Think twice before powering a attacking mon beyond lvl 30. The difference between lvl39 and lvl30 by CPM is 7%, but the difference between move set could be much more. That is, a lvl30 mon with the better new moves will outperform a lvl39 old one. This happened to my maxed out Alakazam with PC+P. Have at least 20w stardust in hand. This allows you to power 3 hatched mon to lvl30 (66,000 each) instantaneously.Answers
I keep 2 things in mind regarding my strategy: Crits might be introduced buffing moves like Dragon Claw, Stone Edge etc.
And they might change the base stats again, because right now they just take the better from Special/Normal attack from the main series. If they change this, Poke like Alakazam might be nerfed because he has a very high special but very low normal attack
Yes, they can and they will rebalance the game to improve it. That's exciting! Your advices are great, but I wouldn't be too obsessed with keeping things that I won't ever use and run out of space. Some moves will be always week. Besides that, I would focus on the present moment and power up/evolve not only to adapt to the current meta but also for fun ;)
That's a really great set of personal guidelines.
Some people play the game differently though. Stardust isn't a problem for most people. Candy - that's another story.
Also, if you live in an area where you can hold multiple gyms for a length of time then it might make more sense to level up 3 mons with whatever current dominant moveset is apparent. If it's generating gold coins every 21 hours, and buckets of dust, then go for it.
Different people play the game differently. Some want to collect. Some focus on gyms. Some on leveling. All these different reasons prompt the player to have a different play style.
Nice advice, I was already doing the attackers not going past level 30, and I actually didn't see any point in powering defenders past level 30 either, but apparently everyone is fond of wasting stardust on the last levels so it kinda forced me to, to hold any decent place on gyms, it'd be better if we had a lot of mons on level 30 and we'd all save candies but oh well...
The evolutions thing happened to me to, evolved a 95% Machop till Machamp only to get bullet punch, cross chop..., and a 91% Dratini to get Dragon breath-hyper beam, just a day before the new moves arrived...sigh
I'd add: keep great IV mons with bad movesets, you never know, they might implement a way to buy a better set.
Agreed, don´t throw away anything good. I hate rebalancing, but you get used to it in every game (I remember Diablo 2 which killed my every build by next patch, which were frequent :) Here, I walked hundred of kilometers with Lapras instead of Snorlax because it´s more COOL :D and there it went... TWICE they crippled Lapras, but this one I really dont understand. First was due to special att and def, now why Lapras again?
