It must be a Maryland thing..... My girlfriend lives in a small patch of townhouses in a U shape. She lives dead middle of the U and it is a goldmine. caught my only Wild Stantler last night. caught a Vape, an Alakazam, a Larvitar, a Chansey. A few more that are unusual but the place usually spawns 6-10 pokemon every 30mins. If i am not and not into anything like a movie or whatever it is Stardust city. THIS is why i am always short on balls lol. Nice on the grimers though!
What I have caught in my neighborhood.
This isn't a question I just thought with pokemon go being a year old I thought I'd share pokemon I have caught in my rural neighborhood.
2 grimers
1 slowbro
1 snorlax
1 arcanine (i caught it in my yard)
1 haunter (not during Halloween)
A few dratinis and magikarps (I live near a pond)
And an octillery (also in my yard)
I posted this to show you can still catch good pokemon in a rural area even though I did have the advantage of a pond.

It depends what rural area. A friend of mine lives in a village where there were only 2 gyms at a huge distance from each other, and the only pokestops were at a train station. He had to go all the way to the station to catch anything, and there was enough distance to hatch a 2km egg from his house to the station. He gave up though.
When the game first came out, there was a spawn point in my front yard. At 20 minutes past the hour it would spawn 1 mon.
When I was level 9, on a Saturday afternoon, a D'nite spawned. Red ball after red ball, I threw over 25, and it finally ran away. The next morning I made level 10, and later that afternoon another D'nite spawned. This one I caught and still have!. I've only caught 1 other wild D'nite since.
2 weeks later, I caught my only wild Snorlax at the end of my street at 6 am.
About a month after I caught the D'nite in my yard, they changed the spawn points and I have never had another spawn of any type at my house.
My nearest pokiestop is about 1/4 mile from home, The next nearest is more than a mile, and the nearest gym is 2.3 miles.
The rural neighborhood I live in has no pokestops or gyms, and just a handful of spots with random spawns that are all at least a few houses away from me, but yesterday I managed to catch a Meganium, a Victreebel, and a Beedrill all in my neighborhood, and a Snorlax the day before. None of them were any good, of course, but it was interesting to see so many unusual pokemon.
And then there was another Snorlax last night with 2449 CP (highest I've ever seen on a wild pokemon) at one of the two pokestops by a church 1/4 mile away from my neighborhood.
(And now another Meganium, just a couple hours after I posted.)
