What is Gym Control?

I've done a couple of successful raids in my neighborhood at the gym I walk to. However, I hardly ever seem to get the gym control bonus following a raid. However, when I was in Toronto and joined up on a level 4 raid I DID get the bonus.

Fortunately, I've had about 10 raid balls each time and have caught every raid boss, but I'd hate to miss out because I was short 3 balls.

You get the bonus if your team controls that gym that's hosting the raid. You personally don't have to have a mon in the gym.

There have been plenty of times that I haven't gotten a gym bonus when my team does indeed control the gym.

Could easily have been the colour glitch.

A lot of times the colour seen on the gym is NOT actually the controlling team. I have placed my pokemon into gyms that are apparently still controlled by a rival gym.

This. This seems to happen after there is an egg over the gym. And when you defeat the Pokemon inside the gym, for whatever reason, the color remains the same. It doesn't change.

It might be that gym control is decided when the egg appears. Can somebody confirm or refute this?

I have had mons in the gym at the time and not got the bonus...so it was not the colour glitch.

For me too, got 0 for gym control, but this gym was under my team's control about 1 day.

I think it must be team controlling at time of egg, because once I saw the egg, I took control of the gym about 1.5 hours before the raid and it remained that way until after the raid. (the color did indeed change). However, I did not get the bonus.

Just completed ANOTHER raid with the same Blissey from yesterday's raid still in the gym. No Gym Control Bonus. I'm lost as to what it could be.

Maybe it has to be a gym of my color that I am NOT in. Based on what I've seen that's pretty much the only thing it could be.
