you enter the current pokemon species, pokemon level, IVs, target level, and whether you're going to evolve it (if applicable).
the calculator then shows the CP that your pokemon will have when you've powered up and/or evolved it, as well as stardust required, candies required, distance required to get the candies as a buddy pokemon, or how many times you need to capture that pokemon (or other pokemon in it's evolve chain), assuming you don't transfer the pokemon you caught.
for example I put in a 15/15/15 level 1 pidgey and the target was a level 20 pidgeot, which would have 1195 CP, 108 HP, require 47,300 stardust and 119 candies, which would require either 119km of walking or 40 captures, assuming you don't transfer.
