Walking Pseudo-Legendary 5km vs Walking Legendary 20km PKM Buddies

I will be hunting for my first M2 after receiving the ex raid invitation for this Thursday morning (fingers cross i will get it)

I'm curious what are people's thought on this as i was debating whether i should switch my tyranitar buddy to mewtwo after this Thursday,

Is it worth it to walk 20km for a single legendary candy as opposed to 4 psuedo candies (Tyra, Dragonite) for the same distance. A few trainers i talked to told me to just pump rare candies i get from daily raid passes into M2 (especially now there's a good chance it will drop after completing a raid) and i'm better off to keep my tyranitar as buddy as the 20km distance offers very meager rewards

Difficult to say really.
If you are aiming to power up your Mewtwo (I hope you get it and that it is a good one) and haven't loads of Rare candies, then every extra candy from walking helps.

But 20km is quite far to walk and if you don't walk much playing this game and/or the game drift at home/work, then every candy will take forever to get.

I walked mine for 591km, but that really only gave me 29 candies, which isn't that much really. Sure it helped, but it also took a very long time. In the end I spent lots of Rare candies on it anyway to get it to lvl 40. 29 candies really didn't make that much of a difference.

Of course, if you aren't in a hurry to power it up and you don't have/get many Rare candies, then I suppose it's worth walking it.

Besides, getting candies for Tyra, Dragonite etc. is far easier than for Mewtwo.
You get more candies for them during 20km, but it's candies you can find elsewhere. You won't catch or hatch a Mewtwo and it's more likely that you'll find a Tyra raid than a Mewtwo raid.
So there might be fewer Mewtwo candies, but they are more valuable.

Feels like I'm making very little sense and isn't much help.

Anyway, just look at what you need and want. Do you want to power up a Mewtwo immediately, then you might as well just pump Rare candies into it.
And if you are in need of candies for Tyra or Dragonite (or anything else), then maybe stick with those.
Personally I'd rather spend Rare candies on Mewtwo (or a good Legendary) than on Pokemon such as Tyranitar.

I hope my post atleast helped you a bit :)

i think you pretty much laid out both sides of the dilemma xD....so you post definitely helped me

Yeah, i really dread when i see 20km walking distance but on the other hand having a mewtwo as buddy looks so freaking cool haha

I had Feebas, and now Ralts, but considering a buddy change...I actually have more Mewtwo than I can handle--12/12/10 already at 30. 13/12/10 at 30. 13/13/11 just got to 30. Have 61 Mewtwo candy left and another EX on Thursday. I'd also like to put some more rare candy into Kyogre (32)/Groudon (31)/Raikou (38) to max or almost max

Use rare candies. There are tons of pokes I would walk over any legendary.

I have 3330, 3327, 3213, 3145 Dragonites and 148 Dratini candy...Dratini is the best buddy I can think of right now. Better than my current ralts, since I actually see those and I have the best Gardevoir I'll get

Saying Dratini is the best buddy right now could not be further from the truth considering the dratini mini event on the 24th

My best Dragonites are 96%; 93% and 93% and not maxed. I might consider evolving a new one, too. I don’t buy incubators...however, today I hatched a bad IV dratini which gave me 33 more candy...at 175. I’m trying to shut out the chat boards when Rayquaza arrives, so things helping get there at the top of my mind currently

I would personally just use rare candies and this is someone who walks a lot playing this game (average between 5 and 10km a day). It would take an astronomical amount of walking to make a dent in the number needed to Max.

Do you have hundreds of extra larvitar/ttar/any candy that you will never use (cuz you already have several maxed)? Then go ahead and walk a legendary.

I’ve switched legendaries in from time to time and I walk between 60-80 km then I realize that those 3-4 extra candies are half a power up or less, or the equivalent of 1 legendary raids worth of rare candy. But if I had kept my Ttar/dragon/chansey i’d Have over a dozen candy. Or enough geodude candies to power up several levels.

The return is just so bad it’s not worth it. This is the same reason you should never use rare candies on anything other than legendaries.

I guess my point is, imagine you have 400 larvitar candies and you think. Oh that’s enough i’ll Never need that many. You then hatch/catch a perfect larvitar. To evolve (125) and max (248), you’ll end up with 27 left over, which isn’t much of anything and you be back to scrambling for more.

At least you don’t have to evolve legendaries.

I'm over 2k larvitar candies and got nothing else to walk now, so I'm stuck with feebas 'cause I don't know what to substitute it with now that I am at 200+. I've been thinking about walking a Mewtwo but I am struggling with the same dilemma as OP.

2k is sufficient in my opinion to put that one to rest. But there are other options, I’ve taken to walking chansey again in the event defense ever becomes a thing again, i’ll Be able to max out a couple.

Ralts is another good one in the event it ever gets a fairy quick move. But until I hit something close to 1200+ of something meta relavant i’ll Keep walking it.

Gardevoir won't get a fairy quick move but it doesn't need one that bad because Confusion is so good and hits hard even when neutral.

Feebas, Trapinch, Anorith. All three of them don’t seem to nest and are quite rare. At least get enough for an evolution before going back to Tyranitar.

Anorith spawns a lot during partly cloudy weather, I can't really think of it as that rare, certainly nowhere near the rarity of Feebas or Trapinch.

I am at 1.5k candies for trapinch and just at enough for 2 armaldos

Do you have enough Togepi and Tangela candy for gen 4 already? That gave me a nice diversion right before gen 3.

Yes, spend your candy on Mewtwo and other useful legendaries. Walk 5k or less Pokemon that don't nest like Dratini or Larvitar. When you get a Bagon, that's what you should be walking.

I get rare candy after every raid. I raid my free pass every day. I always seem to have 200+ golden and 100+ rare candy no matter how much I use them. That's 20% of my inventory and that's too much.

What are you saving them for? You're definitely going to power up a Mewtwo and a Kyogre, so spend some candies and free up some inventory space.

Walking legendaries is not worth it for the candy, do it because it looks cool if anything. There's bound to be some non-legendary you need candy for and it's much easier to just raid for rare candies than walk 20km for one.

I am walking legendaries.

Non-legendary can be caught in the wild at level 35. That is already very good and it is rare that it is worth the stardust to power them up to level 40.

On the contrary, legendaries can be caught only at level 20 (rarely 25) and are worth the stardust for powering up to level 30 or 40.

I have enough tyranitar, dragonite and blissey. I do not have 6 maxed out, but I do not want to max some more at the moment because I am cautious of my stardust.
In other words the limiting factor for powering up tyranitar, dragonite, blissey is not the candies (i have a stock that i do not use) but the stardust.
I expect that with the future dratini event, dratini candies will never be the limiting factor. My tyranitar and blissey candies stock is increasing slowly but faster than I can spend them.
On the contrary, the limiting factor for powering up my legendaries is the rare candies.

I use all my rare candy on m2 and never walk it. I have too much tar candy to get:)

As a guy who walked his Dratini 640km to get it up to a lv37 Dragonite, I understand your dilemma extremely well. Here is my personal strategy:

When rare candies were released, they were plentiful and I didn't know that legends would be 20k. As such, I invested them strictly into 5k walkers: my Dragonite, and later an extremely good Larvitar that I hatched. The first legend that I raised was my Zapdos, which hit my 200 or so candies pretty hard. Next came Groudon in preparation for Kyogre, and finally Raikou for the same (Kyogre was my big goal). About the time I started working on getting my Groudon to its break point I realized: these legends will likely have a permanent place on my team, and outside of raids it was impossible to find candy for them. At this point I asked myself this:

Is 20k a fair distance for 1 rare candy?

Considering I had no more 5ks that I wanted to raise, the answer for me was yes. Started walking my Groudon, which saved me candy for my Kyogre, and now I'm walking my Kyogre without regrets.

To summarize: If you plan on raising future legends, then the extra time is not just an investment in your current legend, its also an investment in your next legend.
