Umbreon/Espeon
Im looking at what the tasks are, and im wondering if for that step of the research, does the 10k have to be walked AFTER that part of the research is started, or can part of it be walked beforehand (not changing out the eevee buddy), and when that part of the research is gotten to, the last bit can be walked. Would that still clear that part, or does the whole 10 need to be walked after that part starts?
(personally, i think this is the dumbest part of the research, at least with the gyarados part was helped in that karp were everywhere with double candy, buddying wasnt needed, not making you need to switch your buddy if you want to progress after we already did this for the eevee event)

It looks like it's about getting the two candy for walking Eevee, so if you prewalk 4.9 km, and then get the task, you can walk another 5.1 km to complete it. About to test that, started walking an Eevee, up to 1.5 km already, and I have 0.3 km left on my 9th egg. We'll see.

I think it was excellently timed. Now we all have a nice selection of Eevees to choose from for these tasks, including possibly some shinies.
I'm not disagreeing with you on the shinies part. The reason i think it was poorly times was we had it last week, and most people walked 20 k for those eevee (some more, 40k if you got a shiny for each) and now its another 20k. yes it is a good excuse to evolve that shiny to espeon/umbreon with a dark/psy moveset, but its also the principle, that you *have to* make it your buddy for this part, not walking what you want (compare and extra 4 eevee candy to an extra 4 dratini candy)
You do get a stage reward for it. Really I think this questline is a lot easier than the Mew's. Most have barrels of candy of just about everything, Niantic needed to do something to put an effort into finishing. IMO worse would be evolve a Tyranitar...if it was that, I just might not have tried to complete it
Impossible to keep everyone happy with these tasks, if ur a high level player there isn't much of a challenge there & plenty of lower level trainers struggled last time with the catch 10 ghosts, the ditto & the Karp candies so this time they've made it easier. Personally I would've liked a super hard questline that made you work but I get why this would never happen.
Given the wording of the research it sounds like you need to freshly walk 10k from the time research starts. I just hit 3/8 today so I won't know for sure until I power through these nine(!) eggs.
Niantic really wants people to walk a shitton for Celebi, Mew's walking tasks could be handled pretty easily with a 1k buddy.
