Umbreon Trick??

I had two 100% Eevee's and desperately wanted one of them to be an Umbreon. After walking both of them for 12km. I evolved them and got a Jolteon and a Flareon. I don't get why they didn't turn into an Umbreon? They need to be walked for 10km (I did 12km), they need to be set as my current buddy (they were), and I needed to evolve it at night (I did).

That's sad and odd. Let's see...

  1. Are you sure you got 2 candies?
  2. Do you have a good signal when you evolved them?
  3. Are you sure you evolved them during nightime in the app itself?

Did you walk them for 12km AND get 2 candies from the walk?

Let's say you walked 4km, switched buddies, then switched back and walked another 8km, then for those 12km walk you only got 1 candy - in this case the trick won't work.

Did you evolve them after removing them as a buddy?

The criteria are...

  1. Walk for 2 candies
  2. Walk for 10km
  3. Evolve day/night depending on what you want.
  4. They must be your buddy when you evolve them.

I suspect you missed requirement 4...but that is just a guess.

I did all of that. The first time I did it, I didn't have it set as my buddy so I learned from that. The second time I looked up videos and everything.

I have seen reports that GPS fail at the time of evolve can have an effect - but that is just reading what others report and not personal experience.
.
The report I saw on TSR spoke about going through a train tunnel as the evolve happened, but the key was it lost GPS tracking - so the game couldn't confirm the day/night requirement.

I am not sure if perhaps this had anything to do with it but it is worth mentioning in this discussion.

It sounds like one way or another you were very unlucky indeed especially for the second.

For Umbreon, walk for 2 candies/10km with the Eevee as your buddy and hatch in the PM, for Espeon, same thing but hatch in the AM.

You can't remove them as your buddy prior to the evolution. You must walk it 10km and evolve it while it is still your buddy. This has worked every time for me.

Forget about the candies, 10 km is the magic figure. Trust me, I tried with two candies during a buddy event and it didn’t work. Ever has to be current buddy as well.

Careful with that as both are necessary.

Just as 2 candies alone is not the trick, as you found on double candy (or 1/2 buddy distance) event...10kms alone is also not the trick.

For example, if I walk 5.5kms, then change buddy and go back and walk 4.5kms, it will fail too.

You need 10km AND 2 candy AND time of day AND still your buddy.

Yes. You need to hit all the requirements. The only soft caveat is that after completing the requirements, you can change your buddy (if it is the wrong time of day and don't want to waste distance walking). As long as you remember to make it your buddy again before you evolve and your phone has good GPS signal so the app can tell whether it is day or night, it will evolve correctly into Espeon or Umbreon.

I did 12km straight. I didn't change the buddy and it was set as my buddy when I evolved. I saw it get +2 candies.

Ok, I give you that. Never imagined that someone could be stupid enough to switch buddy during a 10 km walk. Anyway if you just focus on walking those 10 km and nothing else, then 2 candies come automatically (until the half candy event...)

I am just being a bit pedantic, but I thought it was a valid detail to mention in the context of the discussion.

It was clearly not a problems with the time of the day, as in this case one would get Espeon instead. The likely explanation is that you un-buddied them and thus did not get the two candies necessary for 2nd Gen evolutions.

GPS signal could have been another explanation. If your phone does not have a good GPS signal at the moment you evolve, the game does not know wether it is day or night in your area (even though the screen background might display the correct mode) and the Eevee is evolved into a Gen 1 evolution instead

I honestly believe this was the case. My phone has wonky GPS sometimes. I guess I will try again lol.

You have to rename them.....

I haven't seen anyone else point this out, but I believe you are supposed to evolve them through the buddy screen. That is, open up your buddy screen (where you can switch your buddy) and click near the words "Walk with your buddy" which takes you to the pokemon screen, and evolve.

Yes. This seems to be a must. Also, I always restart the game and make sure I have good reception before evolving.

yes, as above noted AND darkness IN the game, not time of day wherever in the world you are. I almost made that mistake.
