Total defense output
I only have one gym near me, and one very gym snipey rival who I hate. Sometimes he will pull up right next to me and snipe the gym after I take it. Anyway, I need to wear down his item supply and just get him to give up completely. I need to make sure I'm putting in my strongest defender. I just recently read Pokemon level played a part in the damage formula which is confusing.

In gym battling, it's not the question of how strong you are (against your rivals) but it's the question of how much prestige you can add to your gym while your rival tries to deplete it. With one Magikarp in the gym and a grass-type pokemon I can add 1000 prestige each training battle and scare away many rivals who tries to take me down with no luck.
