Especially if you're not at level 38 yet and lucky eggs are still useful!

Found the lucky eggs real burden but hesitated to dump. Rumor has it that level cap could be raised.

As good as raising the level cap would be, I don't think it would a practical idea. Consider this: the CP of pokemon is bound by trainer level. If this were to raise ... Well. I will let you piece it together.

If it were to come around, it'd probably be virtual leveling.

The only think I could think off is that at level 40 a pokemon's level would increase along with you without the need to spend candy/dust, but that likely wont happen

Pokémon level never increased with trainer level. You could, however, pay stardust and candy to increase the Pokémon level based on you trainer level. Reference YouTube for some ideas. The candy and stardust costs are astronomical.

There is absolutely nothing saying that they need to raise the pokemon level cap if they raise the trainer level cap.

As for the pokemon level cap, they could easily make it scale even worse for the stats after 40 while keeping the steep increase in resource cost. This would mean that only the most hardcores of players would max to the new level cap, or maybe more players would start considering it as something you only do for your favorite pokemon. Or if they don't make the reward-resource cost ratio super bad, they could always add new items that you need to raise pokemon beyond level 40 and gate them somehow so players would be extremely limited either way.

Lucky eggs are so easy to use that you would have to be sitting on a huge pile of them for dumping to make any sense. If they're in the way, use one every time you get a great friend or do a legendary raid. It won't take long to burn through them and you still got something out of it.

More than rumour, it's some people's desire. It's not something happening soon anyway. If it was about rumours we would be analysing gen 4 pokemon instead of event boxes here...
