Survey Part Two: How should skill replacement be added?

Based on responses and suggestions of the first survey, it has since been refined and updated. Less popular options removed, and suggestions have been added.

1) "A super ultra rare drop from the unevolved catch/hatch of the particular species of Pokémon it works for. Add a candy cost to the actual use too." -idea suggested by JHVS. I personally feel it shouldn't be that rare if there is a candy cost, but it would be a good way to get the TMs.

2) Random reroll: as Stormbeard99 recently posted about, you would buy an item from the pokeshop that would reroll your Pokemon's moveset like a new catch. However you would also pay candy to use the TM you bought, as per Kristophian's suggestion. He also supported this combined with suggestion 1).

3) Every daily spin you get a random TM: This encourages the daily play even further and makes you super excited when you get that TM you wanted. Consequently they would also add a new item inventory for just TMs (starting at 150 capacity). Some people thought this was unbalanced but if you think about it, you could have like 7 tackle TMs, 5 flamethrower, 1 fireblast etc... it would be completely random so daily spins would be entirely fair. If it were more uncommon you could never get the TM you wanted.

4) Spend half the candy it takes to evolve that Pokemon to reroll the moveset. For example it costs 100 to evolve Machoke to Machamp, so you would spend 50 candies to reroll a Machamp instead. The sacrifice here is you give up the chance to make another Machamp in hopes of upgrading a previous one. This option is hardly a defined cost, if you like it but think a different cost is warranted let me know. aSp thought it should be equal/more cost because you already have a Pokemon with great IVs.

5) Arak's suggestion: "Every catch has a chance to drop a TM. The TM would be one of the moves the Catch Has. Chance would be roughly equal to the chance of an Evolution item on a Spin. They could factor in rareness of spawn to make the overall odds a bit better for rarer moves" He also suggested in addition to this "The funnest part would be 7 Day Catch = Guarantee Item." to make it easier, however I can't imagine this working well due to rare catches like a Gyarados. That is why I prefer idea #1 which allows you to possibly get a Gyarados move from Magikarp.

6) gibell suggested: "Walk with your buddy for 20 km and you see the option "Teach new moves?" which rerolls the move set (for your buddy)." I think this would be a bit too powerful, so maybe a higher distance like 50-100km, or another factor like a candy cost. 20km + candy cost sounds reasonable.

7) Patcallo suggested: "I think that TM should be a reward for battling. Maybe you get one for a poke faint his 100th opponent or cumulatively defeating 100X his CP. This would get you to use some different Mon (Miltank for Body Slam, maybe)." I think a TM reward for every 100 faints would encourage PVP. Not sure how well this would balance though with bots everywhere. They could easily farm up ideal TMs this way. However bots should not run the game, players should, and this could be fun for players!

At the end of my survey I will attempt to submit the results to Niantic, we will see how that goes :P

I laud your positivity that this would yield even a response. Nevertheless, 3, 5 and 6 is pretty easy to obtain. I'd opt for option 2 since it can't really be spammed because candies are involved. 1 is cool but the unevolved tag kinda ruins it. For me it can be at least part of the evolution branch or even the higher the tier, the greater the chance. 4 is pretty easy so I'd pass. 6 is a worse version of 4. And the last one is just meh. It could be a reward for a gym battle event. Like a raid or whatever sponsored by one of the sponsors found in the code so it can't really be abused.

Note the ":P" I don't really expect it to work haha. Going to try anyway. I agree about option 2, it is definitely the most viable for Niantic because they get money from it and it isn't spammable without catching stuff as well.

3, 6, and 7 I can see being added in some form

7 would be difficult as not every Pokémon is battle ready but Trainers may still like to teach it moves for certain match ups against similarly ranked pokes for 1v1

Re-rolling shouldn't be to easy to get. To be fair to the people including myself who were forced to transfer rare Pokemon due to limited storage.

Comments
options 1: Too specific that means you would have to create 200+ new items for each pokemon.

options 2: If it can be purchase then rich kids have a big advantage. They already have a big advantage on hatching eggs.

Option 3: I like 3 but I'm gonna revise/add suggestions

A new evo item drop from pokestop is best. The evo item has the ability re-roll moves or convert the evo item into 100,000 stardust. That way people who have mostly have ideal moves can choose stardust. I think it should also be the rarest evo item & seven day streak does not guaranteed it.

its a separate issue but Evo item should have its own storage. I am sitting here with 25 evo items and I can't use any because I don't have any candies to use it.

Option 4: 50 to 100 candies seems fair to re-roll. But does not benefit the people who already transferred Pokemon.

Option 5: too specific same problems as option 1
Option 6: 20KM seriously? its too easy
Option 7: Not all people do gyms.

To be fair about your issue with option 4... the game has already done that. When they changed the moves when Gen 2 came out, some people had already transferred Pokemon who had formerly bad moves. Any change is going to have some penalty for those who played based on a previous meta.

I do appreciate your input though :)

You got to understand that I transferred 100IV Tyranitar with Bite/Fireblast. How hard do you think to get a 100IV Larvitar? is it as easy as obtaining 50 to 100 candies?

I can't really help that you transferred that. I think most players would not have made the same choice.

Your right but it's also possible some players made the same decision I made.

Definitely 1, 3, 4, or 6. Giving up the chance at another Machamp is fair considering you could be changing a completely useless one (bullet punch/submission) into a newer and MUCH better moveset. Doing that for < 125 candies (such as when done with a buddy distance bonus) is also more fair when considering certain mons such as machop are ultra rare in many areas.

That is my thinking in regards to TMs. It is very hard for me to get Machamp and my Bullet/Dynamic I would love to reroll. Also my Vileplume is rare, only have because grass event and it got Acid/Moonbeam... so yeah.

My favorite idea is still daily spins grant random TMs.

I don't think it's a good idea to reroll movesets. If you can do that, everyone will get the best moveset and will become less excited to catch the same Pokémons. Besides, if Pokémon Go is imitating real life experience, then the answer is even more negative. People in real life don't necessary get what they want, but they would make the most out of it. If you train battle hard enough, even the worse moveset is good enough. Also, you can compensate for that by leveling up or getting higher IV mons.
Everyone wants his life to be easy but that's not the reality. Sometimes you just have to suck it up and work even harder. I believe that actually brings diversity into the game.
P.S. I feel lots of people here like to brag how lucky they are because of getting certain moveset. But I bet they do not use that to battle very much. At the end, it's more about showing off.

Amen!

I think making movesets non-changable was a good decision. Basically EVERY largescale multiplayer game (incl. virtually all MMOs) has to have some really BS random thing involved in getting the best things in order to make it harder, and keep you playing longer to get what you want...

This.

We have rerolls...you go and catch more, earn candy and get another candidte - then you reroll another evolution.
The game has them already built in, but people just want it made too easy - because making an effort seems like hard work.

Enjoy what you have, or work to change it - clearly it is a difficult concept for some to grasp.
