sub-optimal moveset with zero viability. what does it mean?

I'm renaming my pokemons based on the movesets grades. However, some movesets have an "X" mark on either the attack column, the defense column, or both. Under the table, a legend says "X = Sub-optimal moveset with zero viability". Can someone explain to me what it means? TIA

It means it is a suboptimal moveset with a bit niche, but is unfortunately outclassed, like Gengar with Sucker Punch + Focus Blast.

It may also mean a suboptimal moveset with no niche uses or does not show as top counters in its niches, like Gyarados with Bite + Twister or Dragonite with Steel Wing + Dragon Claw.

What if I have a moveset with an ATK-DEF combination grade of C-C, will that be a better grade than A-X? i.e. Dragonite C-C (Dragon Tail - Dragon Pulse) and Dragonite A-X (Dragon Breath - Outrage)

It is not advisable to consider both grades at once, but rather either Atk or defence. In your example, either of them is a good attacking moveset, but there are better ones available. Dragon Tail/ Pulse is a solid defensive moveset. So you have DT/ Pulse which is okay at both things and DB/O which excels on attack but is weak on defense.

In general, Quick Moves are the important bit on defense, which is why DB is rated low. This is mostly due to its low base damage.

Generally speaking, it is more important to have good offensive movesets than good defensive movesets. In fact, if you hear someone mention just "a good moveset" without a qualifier, they are most likely talking about an offensive moveset. It is only important to have a good defensive moveset when trying to hold a gym before a raid.

If you are naming things with ratings, Ibwould also recommend using abbreviations for the moveset as well. Abbreviations will help you pick the right attackers when you need them and help you learn which moves are better eventually without having to look them up.

"Sub-optimal moveset with zero viability" simply means "useless".
