Strange gym behavior - can anyone explain?

Came across a friendly gym tonight, was about to train it up enough to put a mon in when a car pulls up.
I recognized the car as belonging to a local couple : high-level, hardcore team-blue players who are in ALL the gyms.
Since they were obviously there to take the gym, I moved on. No point wasting resources.

I was a couple blocks away when I saw the gym go grey and then, to my surprise, turn yellow rather than blue.
I looked to see what they'd put in : a Charmander. The trainer name wasn't one I recognized.

THEN, the gym was immediately under attack again, tumbled, and this time it turned blue, and this time the trainer name was the one I recognized as belonging to one half of this couple.

Question : did they have something to gain by taking the gym with a secondary account before re-taking it with their primary account?

Or did the secondary account just happen to be the one they were logged in to?

Assuming there wasn't a friend in the car....they probably collected the coin and switched to primary to hold the gym.

Yeah, I was blocks away when it changed so idk if it was just the two of them or not.

Looks like the typical gym sniper to me, maybe they just weren't fast enough to put their mons in.

I'm willing to bet they have kids, so log-on with their child's account to get some coins for their junior pokemon trainer. I use to see the same at a local park I do my re-supply runs, where the poor dad has to log on all this kids accounts when something interesting shows-up or they take the gym.

Blue is EVERYWHERE. I'm yellow like you and it's hard to keep a gym because blue is always taking over. If I was blue, keeping a gym would not be hard at all. Claiming 10 while walking would be a breeze where 10 in yellow is nearly impossible.

I'm Blue and can verify this. For some odd reason I just demolish yellow gyms above level 3 for no reason. Most of the time I just walk away leaving it gray after clearing it lol.

But when you have a surplus of gyms to defend, it's best to keep the rivals at bay by taking down their gyms so they don't have enough time and resources to go after the ones you really want to keep lol.

Odds are they are breaking the Terms of Use and have 2 accounts.

They are probably making a Yellow Account in order to knock down blue gyms they arent in and can then power back up to put themselves in.

Yes, I don't think they were sniped. They have another account on the Yellow team and wanted to collect the coin.

Plus, the get the XP for defeating the Charmander which they won't bother to revive, probably using a throw away attacker that they won't bother to revive.
