Steelix: Dragon vs. Iron Tail

I expect Steelix to profit from the future gym rework and that's why I would like to get one with the best defensive moveset.

So I read a lot on this page how IronTail/HS is the best but I consider DT on par or slightly better. Against to most common attackers Vap, Flareon and Dragonite the Damage dealt is exactly the same while Energy gain is higher for DT.
Psychologically DT is better again because a Dragon attacker might stop once he sees the super effective message (while the Vap attacker gets encouraged by the non effective messages from IronTail).

What do you guys think now after 4 weeks of field experience?

Don't you want to be attacked by dragonite instead of vape? It's a good wall against dragon type. The best part of Steelix is its low cp and catching dragonite steamrollers off guard right from the get go.

I meant the attacker stops completely, which is best case for me. But even if he switches to a Vap it grants 2 additional Fast Moves for my defender, not bad either.

Best of luck, I haven't had much in my evolves with Steelix.

DT > IT
And in my experience, DT/C gives more trouble than DT/HS or IT/HS.

I agree with crunch. I like it's frequency. Though during simulations for the movesets HS did do better against it's worst matchups.

The problem with simulators is that it can't replicate real player strategies with accuracy. Rating any EQ moveset above any Crunch moveset clearly proves that.

I trained against my three Steelix multiple times. One DT/C, one DT/EQ, one IT/HS. All from hatched level 20 Onix above 82% IV.
EQ and HS didn't hit me once, and EQ performed worst against all matchups by a huge difference.
Crunch got me some times because of it's frequency and quick launch. Was the toughest moveset to deal with.

I'm fully aware of the mechanics of simulators and the differences of real world play. Assumptions have to be made or grades would never be assigned. It's not as if there is no thought put into it, either way there are circumstances where one is better than the other.

I'm not disagreeing with you, just saying the movesets are correct. Folks will always, and should always have their own preference too.

Earthquake > Heavy Slam

Both have very similar DPS but Earthquake is pretty tricky to dodge these days ESPECIALLY for newer players.

The problem with eartquaque is that Steelix is not even gonna get to 100 energy against say.... vaporeon, where HS is at least going off once.

Rigth now... SE, NVE and STAB have the same multiplier, so it's really only psychological, you are trading SE to get STAB or viceversa, either way Steelix is not gonna stop a dragonite or a vaporeon, and it's gonna deal the same ammount of damage against either one of them regardless.
If using DT
Against Dragonite: No stab, and SE damage: D*1.25
Against Vaporeon: No stab, neutral damage: D * 1

If Using IT:
Against Dragonite: Stab, neutral damage: D * 1.25
Against vaporeon: Stab , NVE damage: D * 1.25 * 0.8

So in both cases you get 125% damage vs dragonite and 100% damage vs vaporeon. The difference is, vs any other non-dragon pokemon, unless it double resists Steel, you are better off using Iron tail because you will always have STAB, and only sometimes will have SE damage.

There's very little difference, but in theory yes it would give a small edge to DT... but then again, dealing more damage vs anything other than dragonite would (for me) give the edge back to IT. In the end any determined attacker will make short work of steelix, and having double weakness to vaporeon's attack and low max CP would deter me from putting him in gyms at all.

It doesn't deal more damage versus Water and Fire types, the most prevalent attackers.

Steelix has only a simple weakness to Vap not double.

And he has great base stats, the only problem is the CP Formula at the moment. If they rework the Gym battles, Steelix might turn out to be very strong defender.
