Steelix - confusing typing - applications?

I got a nice Steelix, 2080 CP @ lvl 30, Iron tail & earthquake.
It has a pretty good defense, a medium low attack stat, what qualifies him to be a good prestiger.

I looked through the typing and found no really good matchup. Do i overlook anything, or is it just good against many and not really superior against anybody?

Against Rhydon, which does fine.

Steelix is useless on defense, totally crushed by Vaporeon.

Fighting against rhydon - this is a niche no one has taken before - no one except all grass- and water-attackers. :-(

as much as i love steelix, he's really terrible for defense. which can easily be killed by a medium CP mon.
