I have a 100% Steelix with Dragon Tail and Heavy Slam, and I've been trying to decide if there's any point in powering him up. I'm level 33, but the Steelix was hatched during the Easter event, so he's just level 20. Blue gyms never last more than an hour around here, so shaving is a non-issue, and my main concern is trying to hold a few gyms long enough to collect from 4 or 5 of them. I've only ever seen one Chansey (Level 13, 35.6% IVs) so Blissey is not an option, and I usually just poke one of my random Vaporeons in for the few minutes before they get kicked out. Might Steelix do any better? I've never fought against one to know how they fare. Maybe even just the novelty factor could slow people down enough to give me an extra minute or two?

I wouldn't. Gym turnover is high in your area anyway as you said. Maybe a side project?

I have tons of stardust, so the decision is mainly whether to make the Steelix my buddy for the candy. I suppose I won't bother, though, seems not worth the effort.

Onix has nests, too much of a bother buddying it. Even Geodude is a better buddy (not many of them around here and I rarely have patience walking 5 km buddies)

Coincidentally, an Onix nest did just appear 5 miles away from my house after yesterday's migration. However, it's on an island that I have no good way to reach.

If your gyms are that competitive a Steelix won't last either

Yeah, that's what I figured, but was hoping maybe the high defense meant Steelix is actually a better defender than Vaporeon, but people don't use it because of its low CP.

He is a good defender cp aside his main problem are vapes and flareon but he could cause trouble with almost any other attack but not good to prestige against so theres a con

Yeah, 1.25X, super effective (steel is weak to fire and ground does not compensate)

Flareon resists both IT and HS too

Haven't fought a steelix in a long time, but I remember him being a strong defender. Consider leveling it to 30. Don't buddy it btw, just power it up when you find candies.

^ this. Gym rework is coming which could potentially help lower CP defenders or not. Fun mon to use though so power it up to 30

Unfortunately, I've only ever gotten 4 Onix, and 3 of those were from eggs, so if I don't buddy him I probably won't get any more candy for months, until I happen to hatch another one from an egg.

I've been walking with my one Chansey, on the off chance I ever find one worth evolving. Maybe I'll switch to the Steelix if I reach 60 or so Chansey candy.

He is a good defender. Just understand it is Blissey, Snorlax, then the rest. Steelix would be on par with a Vaporeon, but better or worse depending on the pokemon around him and the level of a gym.

Typically, any gym I'd put him in would be one I just captured, so he would be the only guy in there.

He is a good defender time wise, even against it's worst matchups he lasts quite awhile. If you lived in a non competitive area where he wouldn't sit at the bottom and get kicked out after the first fight and he wouldn't wall off prestigers he would be a good choice to power up. Otherwise no.

Steelix looks badass sitting on top of a gym. Never lasts long since he's a novelty... everybody wants to fight him.

I wish I had that one. I'd power it up, because it's a pretty good defender (of course not close to Blissey or Snorlax, as others have stated) and because it's just really cool to have a 100% Steelix. Mainly the last part.

Maybe use it as a prestiger against those Dragonites.

That could work well in some areas, but even at level 20, his 1393 CP is actually a bit strong for prestiging around here. The rare time I find a gym that's already blue, the only Dragonites I ever see always have a 2400ish Vaporeon or two below them, and I always try to get the full 1000 points. Maybe I'll try it anyway some time, though, to see how he does.

Steelix is better than Vaporeon with this formula, but the formula doesn't count that Steelix has SO MANY weaknesses, it only counts the base stats and IVs:
sqrt(ATK)+DEF*0.75+STA
Steelix 0%: 411.916
Steelix 100%: 438.767
Vaporeon 0%: 407.068
Vaporeon 100%: 433.832
Steelix is better than a Vaporeon with a same IV distribution.

Hm, pretty close, ignoring weaknesses. Too bad Steelix has that secondary ground type.

He is a strong defender.
The only thing keeping him off defender Tier lists is his CP.

He is tier 3.5, but I agree, he would've had better placement with higher CP.

Best thing about the Steelix is not its defensive ability but rather its 'shock factor'. It is huge and you will be disheartened to fight it. You will develop an inferiority complex. That psychological blow is huge to a player, it is an even bigger deterrent than Snorlax and Blissey.
