Some theories on why certain changes were made

Why made gyms more stagnant (by slowing all quick moves):
To sell the purchasable clothes Why made evolution items drop rate so low:
To get people out to spin more PokeStops (one of this company's goal is to lower the global BMI) Why rebalance all moves (and new moves are mostly superior):
To make you upgrade Pokemon storage(you don't want to throw away the old ones but you want the new ones) and
To make you replay the game (collect all Pokemon again)

  1. I'm not sure it will lead to stagnation, but time will tell. I think over the last few months there's been as many people complaining about gyms turning over too quickly. Whilst I'm sure they'd love to sell more clothes I think the connection is tenuous :-)
  2. Yes - the whole idea of the game is to get people out and about. I quite like the rarity of the evolution items - I'd have been disappointed if they were too easy to obtain.
  3. Not sure about the storage idea, but yes replaying the game might stave off the 'I'm bored' whingers, and it stops gen 1 suddenly being pointless catches.

As for #1 and #3: They slowed quick moves but also made them deal more per hit, so the DPS isn't very different (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L37Iqpp-eDU&t=0s). So I propose an alternate theory: They wanted to reduce the effect of rounding in the damage formula, making the ATK and DEF IV's more likely to matter. Personally I think they should just use fractional damage, but this is a step in the right direction. It also makes you think about whether to attack or dodge, instead of spamming and still being able to dodge in time.

I can't defend the Chansey event -> Blissey-meta transition though.

  1. Makes no sense. I am not sure how gym stagnation equates to buying more clothes.
Are you suggesting that they want players to collect free coins to buy clothes?
  2. ...is just your need for instant gratification, opposing their need to maintain longevity - but mostly the instant gratification bit.
I bet that if they were common, and you had all your evolutions done in the first day or 2, you would be upset with the amount of 'junk evolution items' that you get when you need balls/potions/revives.

I like that they are rare...I will get them eventually but at least once I am done with them, I won't get them clogging up my space.
If they were common, and clogged up pack space...would we be asking if it is a form of money grab for more pack space?

  1. It keeps you catching all the Gen1 mons for new movesets, so they can justify spawns that are available for new players.

Think long term...not instant gratification.

for #1: holding gym longer = showing off new clothes longer
for #2: I think it's a little too low. I didn't want to be as frequent as berries, but at least every 200-300 spins gives one?

2 It might well be in that sort of range - it will take a huge statistical sample to evaluate frequency. I've had one in about 40-50 spins, but if I get one in the next 10 spins it doesn't mean the chance of spinning one isn't 1-in 200.

I think they made the changes because the changes made the game more fun
