Snorlax vs Lapras as a defender

Which one is more lethal and why? Also how would you rank their moves? Any past experiences to back up your point?

In my experience Lapras w/Ice Shard+Ice Beam is rare, but even more brutal to face than ZH/BS. I primarily use Snorlax, Arcanine, and Vaporeon vs Lapras, but IS hits pretty hard.

I would rank their combined moves: IS/IB, ZH/BS, ZH/HB, IS/B, IS/DP, ZH/Eq, L/BS, L/HB, FB/IB, L/EQ, FB/B, FB/DP. Anyone wish to share their experiences with Lapras? I seldomly see them in gyms and most players I know would be happy to even own 1.

I have a nice IS/IB at 2548. If I can get it in above 3rd from bottom (7th or up) I know it is going to strengthen any gym and make someone work to get it down.
In this position or any better, they will need to face it multiple times to take the gym - and that will be costly.

I have trained against it when I have place it alone in a new gym, and I know he is a formidable defender - one of the best in the game.
The fight will last, and the attacker will take a lot of damage.

Gone are the days it sits at or near the top of a big gym though.

The Lapras is a tougher fight than against my ZH/HB 2781 Snorlax.

That is one good looking Lapras! I agree with you especially since there doesn't seem to be a great counter for Lapras.

He forces an attacker to take something specific for him, if he is in a mixed gym.
I use a Bite/FB Arcanine when I place him in a fresh gym.
I fight him once so someone has to fight him at least twice to get him out, and gives me time to collect ;)

For me they are both great defenders....
Maybe Snorlax have slight harder due to its HP...
That's all....

Assuming the attacker and the defender are at the same level:

Lapras can be taken down by 1v1 battle with Arcanine (and possibly other fire-type Pokémon if they have a high STA IV) if you dodge charge moves.

Snorlax is possible being taken down by 1v1, with Dragonite, Vaporeon or other Pokémon which have elite base stats. Otherwise you have to do something like 1.5v1. It is the best Pokémon to make attackers run out of revives.

Lapras is a decent defender, it is unlucky because some useless defenders like Rhydons have a superior max CPs. However, Lapras would have been even unluckier if it got nerfed (which it should) in the CP update.

Snorlax, has one of the best base stats of the released Pokémon. It has a second high max CP and a good moveset. Also, it got buffed in the CP update.

Snorlax is definitely superior to Lapras after the CP update. Snorlax is the best Pokémon to defend gyms, but the highest spot is usually taken by Dragonites.

Snorlax is stronger on paper, but due to the fact that Lapras has a favorable matchup vs two of the most effective attackers (Dragonite and Vaporeon) and not really any bad matchups, it's a close one. Both are tough to get through, but even though IS hits harder, I find it easier to dodge than ZH.

What ultimately decides it for me is the fact that no matter how tough a Lapras is to beat, it's eventually going to be kicked out of the bottom of a gym by people with a secondary account and a high CP Rhydon/Gyarados to take its place. And that's probably why I never see Lapras in gyms anymore, even though they are not uncommon where I live.

I wish Lapras was better. He's a more sophisticated (and rare for most) defender/attacker. However, his lower overall CP makes him an inferior choice to Snorlax. I mean sure, with some match ups the Lapras is superior, but generally speaking, the Snorlax is better.

I read above too, "gone are the days when (my Lapras) would sit high in gyms for days." At this point, gone are the days when nearly anything sits at the top of a gym for hours. And if it isn't a Snorlax, Rhydon, or Dragonite, it's not sitting at the top of a gym at all unless you live in an area that doesn't have poke-go players.

These days most players are level 27-30 at least and everyone seems to have a Snorlax or a Dragonitie...and if not they have a high CP Rhydon. The rest of the mons are just cool, but not practical for holding a high spot in a gym. Certainly not a Lapras. Unfortunately.

For me Snorlaxes are greater. I have a 82.2% 2617CP IS-Bliz Lapras (can receive two more power ups reaching like 2660CP) and a 3075CP ZH-BS Snorlax and prefer the fat bear as my main defender (even if IS-IB). But the next best defender is Lapras of course (Snorlax > Lapras > Others). I would classify ZH-X > IS-X > L-X BUT since Snorlax can reach higher CP (more than 300CP difference), in general i prefer Snorlaxes for defense UNLESS L-EQ.

Leaving the CP difference aside. I find Lapras the superior defender to Snorlax. Not by much, they are both absolutely great.

Lapras seems to hit harder for me and it probably has to do with both quick moves on Lapras hitting harder and people putting Lick Snorlaxes in gyms doing practically no damage...

Snorlax has more HP, but Vaporeon, which has tons of HP attacking into Lapras is also very slow vs. Vap attacking into a Neutral Snorlax making the matchup seem easier vs Snorlax.

Arcanine (less tanky), Jolteon, etc...attacking into Lapras which most people use would normally cost a revive (if you don't switch) and potions if you need more than 1 mon to knock it out while using A Vaporeon vs Lapras, which is decent just takes long as all the moves are resisted...(you don't want to time out).

My IS/IB Lapras is my best defender, performance wise. She is quite a pain to train up and quite a challenge to take down. I do not see Snorlax (on the enemy gym) as a real threat as Dragonite, Vaporeon, Gyarados could manage them quite easy. Not the case with Lapras as those 3 common attackers would not be that effective.

Unfortunately, her lower CP make she sit at the bottom of the gym. This force me to select Dragonite as the first choice to place in Gym.

That's what I was trying to say, but you said it better. Lapras is a better defender - except for the CP. And the CP is crucial in a time where everyone has a Snorlax/Dragonite/Rhydon powered up. My CP2500 Lapras is lucky to get 6th spot in a gym. Usually around 8th. And at that point it doesn't matter how great of a defender it is. he's only defending everyone else's position above him. Lapras does the work, they get the dust n' gold.
