Are they identical in gym defense? Any preferences?

Yeah. All of Slowking's charge moves are 1-bar, which is generally bad for defense because they are less likely to be used before fainting.

Slowbro with Confusion/Ice Beam is fairly good for defense. Confusion hits Machamp hard if it is placed in between two Blis/lax/king. Ice Beam is super effective if they switch to a grass-type.

Ice Beam is also doubly super effective against flying dragons (the next most common gym attackers after Machamp/Hariyama).

As of now they are virtually the same. Slowbro gets a mega evolution in the future tho... So it might be wise to save your best IVs one for that.
