Slowbro as a defender

Gyms in my area turn over constantly, so typically I take down opposing gyms and am the first defender for my team. Despite claiming one or two local gyms almost daily for months, I have never held one for more than a few hours.

Since I have no chance of holding a gym long enough to collect more than once, I believe my approach to gyms varies from most trainers in the following ways:

I do not value CP as much. I want to hit hard as a defender. I avoid using defenders with clear counters (e.g. Rhydon or Gyarados).

Basically with no hope of occupying a gym for long, I want to be as bruising and annoying to would-be attackers as possible. I do not have a Blissey, Tyranitar, Dragonite with new moves, or good defending Snorlax, so I often find myself using my C/IB Slowbro (CP 2281). I figure it is hard to counter and punishes missed dodges due to its strong damage output. Does anyone else regularly use Slowbro as a defender for these reasons? Also with the three points above in mind, is there a better option (maybe C/SoB Eggy) I am not considering?

I love Slowbro. Unlike you, I have both a Blissey and a Snorlax (only 1 of each), and also unlike you, I don't have a Slowbro good enough for me to invest in. I have some Confusion ones barely over 82%, but as every CP point matters for such a low CP mon, I don't want to max one before I get one with 96%+.

If I had one maxed I would definitely have used it a lot, though. For the same reasons I loved the old Bubble Poliwrath.

Your Bubble Poliwrath comparison is very apt. I have a (now pretty useless) maxed out Bubble/Submission Poliwrath who used to fill the exact role I use Slowbro for now.

Poliwrath w/ RS/DP is actually pretty brutal. You better finish it fast w/ your Psychic type or he could land a few hard hits on you. To a lesser extent RS/IP or B/DP.

Exeggcutor has double weakness to bug, so he doesn't fit your description. ?

I'd use the C/SoB Eggy. Not many strong bug attackers that can take a hit. Someone could use a fire mon but they are still going to get punished by the Eggy.

The Eggy probably has the best opportunity to knock off one of the attacking mons.

C/Seedbomb Exeggutor is also a pain to deal with... after the first 3 confusions, he could suddenly release a charge move with little time to dodge...not to mention confusion hits hard even if you dodge.

I'd try the eggy if I were you. You don't want to start a gym with a Pokémon like blissey or snorlax that isn't prestigeable. My exeggutors and scizor are lower cp than a lot of potential defenders, but I can say from experience strong gyms seem most likely to form around them. Haven't tried with slowbro, but it sounds viable too

Yes but most trainers don't have a bug Pokémon that will destroy a Eggy like a Jolteon will destroy a Gyarados.

Exeguttor is a good choice as well for someone who doesn't have a Blissey or Snorlax.

Ash,
Place defenders with non stab movesets, the attacker might be strong to your mon, but actually weak to your mons attack.

For sure. The type coverage of my Slowbro's non-stab Ice Beam is a big reason why I use it.

You have to rely on attackers not being familiar with Slowbro, which can be the case these days. I have a similar CP Slowbro with C/Psychic which has won some battles, and has spent many days in gyms, but now I have a few Blisseys to take its place.

My go to Mon for high turnover gyms that I have no chance staying in for same reasons you stated.

I love that Slowbro, and I use him quite often. I also use my Slowking with C/Blizz. I also like Tentacruel with blizzard and Poliwrath with ice punch. Hypno with c/pyshock can be really annoying for his cp, and Jolteon with VS/D hits really hard.

I have a 93% IV version of that Slowbro, and I love him. I keep him topped off at all times, and I'm really hoping the new gym rework will let him shine even more.
