I caught a wild Dragonite once, and I've been playing since day one, lvl 39. I've also caught a wild Gyarados and a Vaporeon. Was amazed each time because I didn't think it was possible. The Vap was the only one worth keeping, but I kept them all just cuz wow. Not trying to show off, just letting you know that they are out there.
I've caught four wild Dragonites, the first had crap IVs and is level 4, the second was really good, level 30, 12/11/5 ads (not great, but above average), and I CTMd it from Hyperbeam to Outrage. Currently at level 32, not gonna put much dust into it. Other two are middling levels and IVs.
I think it's that I live in a more rural area - I caught all of them around my house. I usually play around my work, where there's a lot more stuff, but I've never caught a wild Dragonite there.
I had a great day and it was a lot of fun seing the whole city full of players. Actually it senmed there were people playing than not.
The day already started great with finally getting my 100% Larvitar. Wild catch lvl 4, so I already knew where all the dust x3 from catching would go to. Evolved it and it got IT/Cr, so I fast TMed. Then just after the event started 9 10km eggs hatched with starpiece activated ~40.000 dust. Got Feebas, 2 Trapinch, 2 Bagon and 4 mareep. Then immediately got my first shiny dratini! Got another 10 km egg which I put into a fast machine, so 6,7 km was the goal. My best dratini catches were a 96% lvl 31, a 91% lvl 34 and a low level 100%. I got 8 shiny dratini in total out of approximately 170. 230.000 dust total. Evolved the 96% one to get DM and then the 10 km egg hatched a shiny dratini. Evolved it with DM too, even though it had bad IVs to get a shiny Dragonite. After the event I evolved the lvl 34 dratini and it got Hurricane (just what I wanted) and did a Rayquaza Raid where a wheather boosted 91%% fleed. Not all can be perfect for the day but I had a lot of fun and am looking forward to the next community day where I hope for Magikarp.
