Should I power up a Pinsir?

Before the gym update the general advice seemed to be to never power up any Pinsir. It just wasn't good enough.

However, a BB/XS Pinsir is supposedly a good pokemon for soloing Alakazam and for several upcoming legendaries. Sort of a poor mans FC/XS Scizor.

Lacking a good Scizor would you power up a L20 93% (15 attack) Pinsir to level 30? Really don't like spending the dust right now, but if it could give me the needed boost to take on Alakazam solo then I'd do it.

It worths, but you may need some Houndooms and Gengars for the rest of the job by maximizing the DPS. The Alakazam DPS rankings are per Tripledex's old calculations, so it may not be accurate due to rounding issues.

By the way, with its below average stamina stat, it wouldn't last long. However, it resists Focus Blast as a bonus.

The lack of stamina is a problem. Last time I tried on Alakazam solo he just wiped out my glass cannons like it was nothing.

I tried with a team of three B/SE Tyranitars and a variation of glass cannons.

Another option I'm considering is using a fast TM to change my DT/C Gyarados into a B/C Gyarados. I know Gyarados isn't optimal, but it would be double dark and he's at 3000+ cp, so that should count for something, I guess.

I have been super unlucky with my Houndooms. All four of them have at least one fire move and none of them have Foul Play. So I can't get the best moveset by using just one TM. Currently I only have fast TM's, so my best bet would be to use one on my FF/C Houndoom to get S/C. But that would be using a TM on a 62% mon - albeit a L28 one.

Leave your DT/Crunch Gyaradoes for defense, it is the best defensive moveset currently.

Alakazam with Shadow Ball could work, but obviously not the best.

A Bite + Hydro Pump Gyarados has a greater DPS compared to a Crunch one against Alakazam.

I do have Alakazam with Shadow Ball - L29 I think. Not great IV's. It is definitely one of my options.

I have been happy with my DT/C Gyara on defense (which is why I powered him up), but defense plays no role in the game right now and I think that by the time defense becomes important again there are probably numerous better defenders out there.

Do the Gya trick only if it is already maxed for your level. Again, not enough DPS for soloing Alakazam, at least with current stats for raid bosses and Gya.

Hmmm...that's too bad. I think the Gyara is something like L35 or so.

EDIT: It is L35,5.

than do it :) (you are 34 or 35, so close enough :) ).

BTW, this is what I use for quick lookup: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1sn9XiNlwAXxwccK-YtJo_vM6nZRN4VhGjm2cKhuaZBo/htmlview?sle=true#
PRoved good until now. Ofcourse now that raids on pokebattler are on, I advice you to go there for details.
In my source bite/HP deals more DPS vs. ALA, but Crunch is probably better since you can fire full 3 sets and then at lest 2 of the next 3, while HP maybe you end up with only 1 or 2 and almost full next one and faint.

I am asking the same question.

Never really needed a pinsir, but have a level 10 wonder with BB/XS.
Unfortunately, i trashed two scizors with night slash, now i am lacking scizors and their candies.

However, i think, it is really asked for when trying to solo alakazam raid. All other situations can be solved without this guy.

How is your stardust situation. That is what is holding me back. I have 460k stardust, but a TON of mons I want to use it on.

only 0,2M. This is holding me back too. I wait until gym system is changed again, and we know what is needed.

I don't think a level 30 one will do the trick for soloing Alakazam. So unless you want to take it at least to lvl 34, I would not do it.

Better evolve a lvl 30 Scyter with decent IV in hope for a double bug Scizor?

Unfortunately, i do not have the candies, and i do not want to invest my rainbow-colored ones.

I will put this here, since is upper then the thread with the raid (but is related to the discussion about soloing Machamp with lvl 30 mons):
Regarding lvl 30 mons in raids, maybe this can help:

I did not read it, but from quickly browsing it might be useful. Also probably in comments you can find various valuable info.
