Shiny Magikarp dilemma

I'm at level 33, and have one Gyarados so far (lvl 34.5, B+HP) - and I had to walk 180 km for it. Magikarp is quite rare, I normally see it like once per week.

So when this Water event started, I went all out on them trying to get a shiny one, because I really wanted a red Gyarados. I enjoy using "fun" mons that I like even if they're not elite, and I maxed out a bunch of them - Slowbro, Poliwrath, Golem, Cloyster, Tangela, Venusaur, Feraligatr...

Now I've got myself about 700 candies and the only shiny Magikarp I found has 28 CP and around 60% IVs. The low stats don't worry me that much, I've got plenty of stardust and, as I said, I don't mind its CP being a little lower - what I'm wondering is if it's gonna be worth it to wait for a better shiny Karp, considering how rare they'll be for me from now on.

What do you think? Are the shinies still gonna be as "frequent" as they were in this last event?

I would say it's not worth the costs but given how rare Karps are for you I'd do it. It could be months before you see another shiny perhaps longer...

Emotion and passion should not always be guided by logic.
If you want that red Gyrados, then go for it.

I don't see multiple Garys in lineups as must haves. It has a high CP I guess, but for attacking there are other options. If I had the option I would choose to evolve and max out that red Gary. It's extremely iconic and bad ass. Due to the increased Magikarp spawns we saw more shinies than we should have in this event, but no they're not going to be the next Ditto.

One Magikarp a week is still more than I normally see in a desert biome.

Use the CP calculator to see how much candy you need to evolve and power up to a point that it can place well in gyms.

The standard answer is to wait until you have enough candy to evolve and power up before you evolve, then if you get a good moveset you can immediately power it up and use it. If you get a better candidate before you evolve, you can use that one instead. If you get a bad evolved moveset, you are already part of the way to your next evolution with the rest of your candy. In this case with a shiny, the evolved moveset might not matter as much, maybe you'll still find another shiny magikarp before then.

You're lucky that you have one, most players like myself didn't found any and probabl won't. So waiting for a better shiny can be a life long quest.

I caught a similar shiny and there is no way I'm evolving him any time soon.

I definitely want a red Gyarados, but not enough to waste candy (and dust?) on a Mon that won't be that useful.

Also I don't know what the future holds for shinys. If they stick around, I will eventually catch a better one. Also, once everyone and their mom has a red Gyarados, I may not really care anymore.

But like others have said...it is just a game, so have fun and do what makes you happy.

If you just want a red gyarados, just evolve, if you want one that you can use in gyms... well... what does shinyness (if that's a word) has to do with it? Just find one over lvl 20 with good IV's and power it up. If you want both... be prepared to wait a loooon time to get it, because shiny pokemon are very rare.

You won't find a better one in a reasonable time. Enjoy while you can now. Evolve it.
