Best answer: Prob not any time soon.

Upcoming rock pokemon in Gen3, that have slightly higher CP than Golem have much lower attack. As such most people will still stick Golem #1, and that assumes they have double rock moves.

Rhydon and its gen4 upgrade if either ever gets a rock quick move will become #1, but Gen4 is a long long way off and unknown what it will get. And I don't expect another move rebalance anytime soon.

Agree with this. The only gen 3 that might give Golem serious competition is Armaldo, and then only if he gets double rock moves. Given that neither of the current fossil pokemon have that (not counting legacy moves), we might be disappointed.

Looking forward to seeing Aggron in action who, because of his different typing, may be a better counter against certain pokemon (e.g. Articuno).

It's possible Rhydon and Tyranitar may both gain rock quick moves as well.

Does anyone know if Rhydon or Tyranitar get a rock "quick type" move in the video games? I never played so don't know how they match up, but like if Rhydon or Tyranitar never gets to learn Rock Throw, then they probably won't ever learn that move here neither...

I assume Niantic just assigns various moves as quick or charge...

You assume right. Moves that have relatively low power in the games are quick moves, the high damage ones are charge moves.

Niantic do not always take account of what a pokemon learns in the games, for example tyranitar never learns fire blast naturally, Snorlax doesn't learn lick etc. Lick was a signature move of gastly. Niantic just seem to pick and choose.

There are currently 3 candidates for quick move (50 BP or less):
- Accelerock: Gen 7 move, 40 BP.
- Rollout: Gen 2 move, 30 BP.
- Smack Down: 5th gen move, 50 BP.

Out of those 3:
Only Lycanroc learns Accelerock (Gen 7).

Rollout is learned by Aggron, Corsola, Golem, Kabutops, magcargo, Probopass, Omastar, Steelix, Rhydon, Shuckle, Groudon and Regirock (Technically Sudowoodo, throug Bonsly, but that's gen 5).

Smack Down is learned by: Aerodactyl, Aggron, Anorith, Golem, Kabutops, Tyranitar, Magcargo, Probopass, Omastar, Steelix, Regirock, Relicanth, Rhydon and Shuckle
