Returning Player Larvitar Question

Returning player just getting a handle on Community Day and trying to be prepared for the Larvitar day. I have brushed up on the new features but am pretty lost on what pokemon are considered viable and what's worth keeping and what's worth transferring.

Currently I am level 25 and have 3 Larvitar that are "wonders"

A. HP exceeds and according to the IV calculator is 93.3%
B. Defense exceeds and is 88.9%
C. Attack exceeds and is 82.2%

I'm assuming my best bet is to go ahead and evolve Larvitar A on the community day to get the special move for Tyranitar (been walking around with it as my buddy and so far have 116 candies)

Is this Larvitar worth spending stardust on to power up? Or am I still a ways to go before getting any good pokemon? Any other candies I should be stockpiling?

Tyranitar is one of the best, and according to lots of guides, will most likely remain a top attacker in the long run. I'd invest stardust in the 93.3% IV only AFTER you evolve it, just so you can see the moveset before spending stardust. Best moveset currently for offensive Tyranitar is [Bite + Crunch] or [Bite + Stone Edge]. I'm personally saving a 96% Pupitar for community day, so I agree it would be your best bet to wait for Larvitar day before evolving.

Check out GamePress' https://pokemongo.gamepress.gg/attackers-tier-list for Pokemon that is worth investing stardust into.

Will the new exclusive move change the recommended move set for Tyranitar?

Also how likely am I to get better than my 93%? Should I hold out see if I hatch one or catch one with it’s increased encounter rate on the day? Or is my 93% a pretty safe bet at this point ?

1. Recommended move sets depend on what you are attacking. If you are hitting Mewtwo, then Bite/Crunch will probably still be better. The CD rock moveset will be better for example against flying, fire and electric Pokemon. Ho-oh, Moltres and Zapdos come to mind, (if they ever return as raid bosses)

2. You should check the stats. We know only HP is 15, the most important stat is Attack, its either 14 or 13. If its 14 is a safe bet. 13 is also very good, you should'nt worry. If you play all 3 hours in a place with lots of spawns, then you definitely will have enough candy to evolve 2 Larvitars. You can evolve this one once you are sure the event began, then look for another one in the remaining time. Its difficult but not impossible to find something better than 93%. Good luck

Couple weeks ago I caught a 10a/14/14 level 32 larvitar, I'm enough excited about that. Just wish I'd hatch one next week, but best thing larvitar is rock/ground so great chance CD will be boosted here

Tyranitar will always be a relevant attacker. It will be the best dark attacker and rock attacker until Gen 4 hits. Gen 4 will give us better rock attackers, and a better dark attacker if and when they release Darkai. But tyranitar will still be right with them. The more gens that come out the more pokemon will be replaced. Why do you think they are giving the legendary birds out for free? They aren’t that great and future legendarys will make them irrelevant.

When it comes to these community days, you just have to hope that their servers are running fine or else you won't be able to log into your game to get that exclusive move.

Community Day really is about wheather boost. In the 3 hours you will be able to catch between 250-300 Larvitar. With wheather boost your chances of getting a high IV, high lvl one are very good. Without boost you must be very lucky. You have 2 good candidates there, so just wait for the moves to be released and make your decision based on your current lineups. For the exclusive moveset you must evolve during the 3 hour window.

One response commented on this indirectly, but I just want to make sure you understand just HOW POPULATED the community day pokemon ends up being.

He was not exaggerating by much when he said you can catch 250-300 during the 3 hours (or possibly at all). That's 750-900 candies without transfers, or enough to evolve 6-8 Tyranitar.

I say "by much", since I played about 2h45min last community day, and was able to evolve 6 Charizards out of that. I started with around 90 Charmander candy and ended up with 100 leftover after evolving 6 and powering 3 of them up a fair bit, so probably outright earned 900-1000 candy. However, I pinap berried nearly every spawn that was under 300CP, and obviously transferred hundreds of them, so the estimate may be a bit high since that results in double candy + 1.

Do keep in mind that you must evolve during the 3 hour window in order to get the exclusive moveset. You may want to evolve one or two early on in the event to make sure you get the exclusive move in case you end up with a connection issue towards the end. If you don't have any Tyranitar yet, I would also suggest saving enough candy/larvitar for some evolves AFTER the event for the dark movesets as well. I don't have any except a single hatch (with under 80% IV) that gave 23 candy, and I'm planning to evolve 3-4 during the event and 3-5 after the event depending on how much candy I get.

Also REMEMBER to save enough candy to power them up! (added benefit to saving some evolves for after the event, you're out of the time crunch and can take your time making sure you power up the best ones and power up before doing your last evolve to make sure you didn't miscalculate your candy needs).

Finally, you should clear out all your research tasks in advance and plan to be in an area with a lot of unique pokestops. Every research task will be "Catch 3 Larvitar" and they'll give one of 4 rewards: Stardust, Great Balls (5?), Ultra Balls (2?), or Pinap Berries (2?). You can only get a task from each pokestop once. So ideally you walk while catching every one you see, cash in the quests as soon as you can and replace them as you go, in order to maintain your stack of great/ultra balls and Pinap berries. Use pinaps on anything you expect to catch in a single throw, and use ultra balls (or razz-ultra) on anything high leveled (assuming you don't already know their IVs). Practice your curveballs if you don't normally use them.

Sorry for the long post. I hope it's shorter than the community day guide on this site - you can go read that too though if you want!
