[Request] Move Rating Article?

I would absolutely love to see a Gamepress article comparing different Quick and Charged Moves.

Many uninformed players are easily confused when merely looking up the statistics of moves. There is no uniform move-rating system.

Charged Moves:
Some moves such as Brave Bird and Hurricane have high DPS but low damage for 100% of the energy bar, while other moves, such as Outrage and Crunch, have relatively low DPS but deal out a lot of damage for low energy cost, meaning that 100% of the energy bar deals more damage but over a longer period of time. Some move-typing is more desirable than others. For example, Dazzling Gleam on a Blissey is much more desirable than Hyper Beam even when STAB is applied, and this isn't only because Dazzling Gleam is a 2-bar with an earlier damage window.

Fast Moves:
Some moves, like Fury Cutter, are low-damage, high-energy. Other moves, like Waterfall, are high-damage, low-energy. Most average players have a difficult time deciding which move is better since they do not know how DPS and EPS ratios compare. I get that this is also dependent on the Charged Move (For example, Psycho Cut/Shadow Ball Mewtwo may fare better against Alakazam even though Confusion/Shadow Ball may be better in neutral situations), but I'm talking about rating the move in a general sense.

Now I haven't researched this a ton since I don't work for Gamepress, but I'm gonna use what I know off of the top of my head to create a window into what I'd like to see an article of. Here's a small example what I'm really looking for: Let's look at some of the fantastic moves in PoGo that people may not even be aware of:

BEST DEFENDING FAST MOVES (IN ORDER)
1. Volt Switch (20 Damage, 25 Energy per use)
2. Confusion (20 Damage, 15 Energy per use)
3. Hidden Power (15 Damage, 15 Energy per use, random type)
4. Struggle Bug (15 Damage, 15 Energy per use)
5. Mud-Slap (15 Damage, 12 Energy per use)

I could list the move speeds here, but as we all know, defending Pokemon have a much slower attack rate. They also cannot dodge, so energy buildup is a large factor on frail mons with good charged moves like Jolteon.

BEST ATTACKING FAST MOVES (IN ORDER)
1. Counter (13.33 DPS, 8.89 EPS)
2. Shadow Claw (12.86 DPS, 8.57 EPS)
3. Pound/Vine Whip (11.67 DPS, 10.00 EPS)
4. Confusion (12.50 DPS, 9.38 EPS)
5. Dragon Tail (13.64 DPS, 8.18 EPS)

Many players won't know how to pick between moves such as Waterfall (13.33 DPS, 6.67 EPS) and Water Gun (10 DPS, 10 EPS). This is what this article should try to hit at.

---

Charged Moves have many criteria that could rate them, such as defending damage window, damage/energy, dps, or 1-bar/2-bar/3-bar for defending, but I've rated them in an overall category for now since I feel that some moves drastically eclipse others.

BEST OVERALL CHARGED MOVES (IN ORDER)
1. Leaf Blade (70 Damage, 2.4s Cooldown, 30 Energy)
2. Wild Charge/Grass Knot/Power Whip (90 Damage, 2.6s Cooldown, 50 Energy)
3. Dynamic Punch/Avalanche (90 Damage, 2.7s Cooldown, 50 Energy)
4. Sky Attack/Foul Play (70 Damage, 2.0s Cooldown, 50 Energy)
5. Sludge Bomb (80 Damage, 2.3s Cooldown, 50 Energy)
6. Shadow Ball (100 Damage, 3.0s Cooldown, 50 Energy)
7. Blizzard (130 Damage, 3.1s Cooldown, 100 Energy)
8. Hydro Pump (130 Damage, 3.3s Cooldown, 100 Energy)
9. Overheat (160 Damage, 4.0s Cooldown, 100 Energy)
10. Futuresight (120 Damage, 2.7s Cooldown, 100 Energy)

---

In closing, these numbers I have given aren't the definitive ratings out there. This post should instead spur the creation of an article that would do that. Share this so that we may see an article, for movesets help determine the worth of a Pokemon, and for some (like Raikou), even overcome lower stats when comparing them against others!

I like the idea, would love to read an article like that. Some nitpicks however:
Your charge move list is for sure missing Grass Knot. 90 damage, 2,6 cooldown, 50 energy. Future Sight also has better numbers than Hurricane, same CD and energy, 10 more power.

Absolutely - I'm nowhere near perfect on this post it's answers like this that I want to see in the form of a Gamepress article!

Hmm. I am actually working on refining the DPS/TDO formula, so my work could be related to your topic.

I have spent some time on this topic when Gen 2 dropped, summarizing the DPS/EPS and all fast moves within a chart. You may find it here: https://pokemongo.gamepress.gg/q-a/look-move-rebalance-negative-relationship-between-pe-eps

To conclude that one fast move is superior to another, one needs to prove that no matter which charge move it is paired with, the cycle DPS is always higher with the first one. Since there is only limited number of charge moves in the game, one can just iterate through every move by some scripts. Let me do that!

If a formula that weaves DPS and EPS properly is too hard to come by, I believe a generalisation of the move quality for each move type in comparison to its peers is a good way to start and is more meaingful than an aggregate list of all the moves. Most people are not comparing Counter with Steel WIng, they want to know Counter vs Karate Chop, which has its own section in the Machamp page, but an article that aggregates the move comparisons between each type seperately would be brilliant.

A colorful representation can be like this: an example for fire quick moves

Fire Spin: DPS= good (green), EPS = good (green), Cooldown = worst (red/yellow)
Fire Fang: DPS= ok (yellow), EPS = okay (yellow), Cooldown= good (green)
Ember: DPS=bad (red), EPS = best (green), Cooldown = best (green)

We already have comparisons on different movesets on the same mons. What I'm looking for instead is using the quality of a Pokemon's moveset as a factor for comparing it with another mon.

For example, comparing Steel Wing/Solarbeam Ho-Oh with Dragon Tail/Solarbeam Groudon, given that Groudon has much higher stats.

Do you know that Shadow Ball is superior to Dynamic Punch?

Maybe, idk.

I didn't feel Shadow Ball was TOO far ahead of DynamicPunch since it is 10% more cooldown for the 10% more damage, and this is further stalled by its significantly later damage window.

No biggie. I only made this list to spur an actual list getting made.
