Reluctant to evolve my first Tyranitar....

... Because I have read so much about bad movesets. Can someone reassure me?

I just switched my buddy (to my second chansey I just recently hatched). My larvitar Rexy and I walked 139 km for this to happen! He has decent stats (14A, 10D, 14St - 84%). Larvitar just don't spawn here so may be a long time before I can evolve another.

Is there really a bad moveset? He will still get high CP, no matter what, for gym placement. They are not common in gyms here, so that's where he'll go.

Any tips? Do you get better moves if you evolve at night? Or if you stand on one leg, or maybe jump three times? (Just kidding.... ;)

Did yours get what you wanted? If it didn't, is it doing well, maybe better than you thought?

Thanks :)

It took a few tries but I got B/SE. It's kind of like DB/DC for Dragonite. Bite has the same damage and speed as DB did. You can fly all around and easily dodge anything with practice (and good reception). B/C does HUGE damage and you still have bite to dodge with. The only drawback is it is slow. But Tyranitar is bulky and can carry some damage. FB is similar but less damage and it's slow as hell. Still very usable but obviously inferior to the other two sets.

For defense, honestly it hardly matters. At least crunch may come out but it's pretty dodge-able. If it does hit the opposing Pokémon is in trouble.

All movesets are good for either defence or offense, none are bad for both.
Also, moveset doesn't affect gym placement, so just evolve it anyway.

I didn't downvote but Iron Tail is substantially better than Bite for defense. Fireblast is a joke, especially if the offender is using a tanky Vaporeon. In that instance it'll merely tickle. Several times I encountered Tyranitar with Bite and Fireblast using a Vaporeon with about 33% health left or less and easily won

Also, moveset doesn't affect gym placement but if you're going to invest in a Pokémon like Tyranitar then you at least want it to be good. Those candies are too precious. OP said Larvitar are hard to come by

Evolved 3
B/FB
IT/FB
IT/C
Now decided to stop rolling the dice and power up the IT/C one instead. It's difficult here to get candy from catching.

If you have a competitive gym scene, having a high CP is usually the most important factor for any defender except Blissey. Tyranitar has the highest base CP in the game, so your Tyranitar will likely be your highest CP defender, regardless of what moveset you get and will be a great addition to your defender lineup.

If you want an attacker, then moveset does matter. B/SE is amazing. One could make a case for B/SE being the best attacker in the game, especially for players who are big on dodging. However, several of the other movesets also can be useful for attacking, especially against the game's toughest defender -- Blissey.

The article at https://articles.pokebattler.com/2017/06/05/the-best-blissey-counters-considering-sub-optimal-movesets-with-realistic-dodging-pro/ compares how different mons and movesets simulate against Blissey. B/SE is best by a good margin, but B/C and B/FB are also ranked higher than all other mons/movesets except DB/DC and DT/O Dragonite. Even IT/SE and IT/C may be useful.

"Did yours get what you wanted?"

I speak from experience. I've evolved several. My 2nd was a 98% IV with B/SE, which has become my most important attacker and highest CP mon. The others mostly go in gyms since some gyms in my area require a 3100+ CP to hold a decent gym position. 3100 CP is only a level ~30 Tyranitar, so I can get the gym position without huge stardust/candy investment.

I know this is getting repetitive and anoing. But wait a week or two and see if any news of the gym rework hits. Also if not please don't put Tyranitars in gyms. He is a great attacker. He sucks at defending. He is actually the worst of the big 7. So please just stick to pokemon like Vaporeon, Snorlax, Blissey, and even Dragonite if there aren't to many in that specific gym.

Where does this always come from? If you compare Tyranitar on defense with Rhydon, Tyrantiar is clearly better. Iron Tail is ineffective against Water, but Mud Slap is ineffective against Grass. Mud Slap produces more energy, but Iron Tail has higher damage on defense. So in the move department the two are pretty even. What kills Rhydon is its double weakness to Water and Grass. Tyranitar has double weakness only against Fight, which is still much rarer.

The way I see it, no defender is unbeatable in a gym and only Blissey can be challenging when prestiging. So I will put in mons for variety, such as Typhlosion, Charizard, Aerodactyl. If they come home, that's the risk I take.

My advice: appreciation, not expectation.

I chose to evolve mine, got Bite/Fire Blast. Someone expecting the best moveset would be disappointed. I had no expectation, and now appreciate it as a symbol of the effort and progress I put into getting there.

Now I'll choose to try for another! And will enjoy the challenge of collecting and hatching while I make progress.

As a proud owner of a 97% SW/HB Dragonite, I really think it's just more useful to stick T-rex in a gym and forget about it...At that point, movesets matter little since any half decent trainer will knock out Blissey, Snorlax easily...

As great as T-rex is, I still think Machamp is the go to guy against any Blissey or Snorlax...He just does it so much faster and for me at least, time is worth more than possibly trying to deal with 2 Blisseys in a row...

Unless you are swimming in defenders with very high CP, it seems a wiser choice to just stick it in a gym and "win" that way.

If Machamp falls, you follow up with Eggs and any Blissey is toast. At least that's how I've been doing it and I battle 2900-3000+ Blisseys daily.

My views are, of course, all from a free 2 play player so assuming you have stagnant gyms and are on the dominant team in where you play (either home/work), that T-rex CP is just so much higher and you will avoid near all shaving.

TL:DR - Overall, I still think Machamp is better for Blissey. T-rex is better in gyms earning you coins and dust. Don't worry about movesets for defenders you can't control.

I did it! In the midnight hour, no less, he got bite/crunch (both dark moves.... hmm?) At least they get STAB, and are rated A for attacking.

But I'd really like to show him off in gyms ... But will need to power him up quite a bit from CP 2112 (lvl 20.5).

Thoughts/Suggestions?

Thanks for all the advice, much appreciated.

congrats!
if your gym scenes are any like mine i would try to power him up to about 2500 or 2700 for good placement, but i wish you all the luck with your giant rexy

Took a long time to gather candies. Just evolved the 2nd, Bite + Fire Blast. Was only dismayed for a few moments, then moved on. The first was quite good: 96% with Iron Tail + Crunch, which I maxed to 3595. Over time, I will do many, many evolves. So, I don't linger over a bad evolve anymore.

This game involves a lot of luck. Good luck to you.

Just wait a while. After gym rebalance it might turn out that Tyranitar will be an attacker only.

I´ve got two of them and have been really lucky. Both 87% iv, first got B/SE and second got IT/C.

At the moment both sit nicely at the top end of most gyms I put them into, but when attacking B/SE is in another league than IT/C. Especially with Blisseys, once you´ve hit them with B/SE it´s just frustrating dealing with IT/C. Slow attacking and long cooldown times. Missing a lot of attacks out of fear of charge moves during cooldown.

You power this guy up for the CP, simple as that. If you have a low to middling level (32-33), powering up a tyranitar into the 3350+ range might be your only chance to gain access to the middle to low rungs of a level 10 gym.

My level? 34, soon to be 35. In my area, you don't need > 3000 mons for a high gym position (I have some, though), but I will definitely power him up and just made another larvitar my buddy.
