Yes and no. Let me explain, this communication is a huge step for Niantic and the game future, it is very important that they talk to us and explain everything, very nice.
But on the other hand they should never limit this communication to social media and to down times, a lot of players probably never have checked Niantic twitter of FB pages, they should use in game notifications for those things too and also talk about the direction of the game, make something like a monthly review of what are they working on, what we can expect on the upcoming future, what bugs are the most important to fix and how are they addressing them, etc...
