Is raikou worth powering up if you dont have one?

I'm wondering if it would be worth it to power up raikou with anything beyond the candies from the pinab'd research catches (a possible raikou raid day likely wont come for another 3 or so months). I looked at current and past raids and defenders to see its matches

When it comes to flying types, the only ones that are in gyms most of the time are Dragonite/salamence or gyarados, and when gen IV comes out, likely togekiss. Against the dragons, tyranitar handles them much better without the cost of rarecandies. Against Gyarados it goes through it extremely fast, though thats only due to a double weakness that any electric type could take advantage of without the RC cost. Now against Togekiss it would be good, having 2 dps up on tyranitar and not having the weakness to fairy, but that on its own doesnt seem to justify the RC cost. With a projected Moltres Raid day coming up, Tyranitar would take the lead (and also be good against Entei if it ever gets one) and agaisnt a possible return of lugia, it only manages to eek out around 1.1 dps on Bite/SE tyranitar.

Agaisnt the water types, it is the best against kyogre and Suicune, but with the exception of Blizzard Kyogre time's tamed both of them, with alternatives becoming much more viable withought the cost of the rarecandies. Agaisnt Suicune (who likely also wont come back as a raid day for a while) PF venasaur only looses about 1.7 DPS. For three man'ing those two, raikou would be necessary, but they aren't currently in rotation and likely wont for a while. Electric is good against the numerous former raid bosses, but as most of them dont come from Johto, and the johto event will be starting soon it doesnt seem likely that any beyond Azumaril or Croconaw/totadile will be coming. As for the numerous ice/water types, machamo does better against them than Raikou, having more DPS (though raikou has more TDO, but does cost rarecandy)

However, theres on thing I haven't mentioned yet, which is rain. Its a very good generalist in the rain, but outside of that, super effective counters will do better. (even in the rain, when against dragonite, Tyrantiar beats raikou)

If PvP is added, Raikou will likely become better, matching 2 common tanks, kyogre and Lugia, but how PvP is implemented is still yet to be seen.

It doesnt really seem like Raikou, the ones from the breakthroughs at least, are worth powering up because of what the rarecandy cost would be in relation to what Raikou matches that others cant. Is there anything I missed that makes raikou more worth powering up?

How many times are you going to ask the same question?

Even if those other threads weren't entirely focused on Raikou they touched on your apparent disinterest in it enough. Sorry you missed its window of opportunity between Suicune, Kyogre 2x, and Lugia 2x or 3x depending on how you look at it (Lugia R1 was pre-Raikou, hence its exclusion).

The extra candy from the research boxes should cover/close the 20 candy gap from 15 to 20, so assume that's a non-issue. 21.4k dust doesn't take terribly long to farm either. I think your best option would be to save your best box one and trade box Raikou with other people in hopes of getting a lucky. That way if you do get a lucky you'll have an obvious power up target, whereas if you don't you'll still have your best one for future use.

From personal experience, my Raikou were invaluable when called upon for the raid scene and they're still efficient gym sweepers. Even with the potential power houses from Gen 4 looming on the horizon I think you're doing yourself a disservice not utilizing one. And for the love of god, don't stick them in front of A-Eggies.

I actually did an A-Ex raid yesterday using only unboosted raid Articunos. 66 seconds left on clock, with the timer starting at 176...had just started on the 4th.

I ran a bunch of simulations because I couldn't wrap my head around not even attempting to go for the obvious type matchup. A worst-case scenario of 6 freshly caught raid Articuno (L20) with full 10's and Icy Wind won 80-some% of 100 simulated battles against three move variants: DT/DP, DT/SB, and BS/DP. Literally any other move combo from either party yielded a 100% win rate out of 100 sims each. Even the ones that lost had plenty of time to re-enter and mop up with other counters. Novice doesn't even begin to describe the situation.

Whenever you pose a question, you state it in such a way that suggests you have already come to your own conclusion. I feel like this question has been discussed at length so I will give my brief opinion. If you are most interested in the future raid bosses then using the steep resources for Raikou is probably not worth it for you. I have found great joy in using Raikou when it makes sense or whenever he at least isn't being significantly resisted by type. Of course, I powered one up when it still made perfect sense. My goal is to have fun and so I will eventually max one of each of my favorite Legendary Pokemon. From a strategic perspective, save your resources for the best options as that seems to be your style.

The answer to this question will entirely depend on your situation. I would personally power up kyogre or mewtwo ahead of raikou (especially now at this given moment). However, if you already have a few Kyo or M2 powered up and are looking for a project then I'd certainly power up a raikou. It's extremely versatile given it's optimal moveset (high powered and great for dodging) and unlike many other electrics it's quite bulky. I think the bulkiness is it's saving grace. In gym battles it's still remains useful even when it's not the "optimum counter" sure you can lineup 6 perfect counters and switch every battle, but it's a whole lot easier to pick a good mon and just run through the whole time with one.

I'll answer only to the title, since the whole post was too long to read it now.

Have you powered up Zapdos?
- If yes, forget raikou for now.
- If no, go ahead with raikou.

General advice: only power up what you really need in the current meta. ATM raikou is a No.

+They change tier 3 and 4s all the time. Raikou will be plenty relevant at some point, unless you don't care about soloing/douing.

Raikou is among the best generalist gym attackers. Non-legendary Electric-types are fragile against Gyarados (though Electivire and Magnezone may change that). Other Water-type defenders, notably Milotic, Lapras, Vaporeon and even Slowbro, are also popular. Since I lack a Metagross with BP/FC, my Raikou gets the job done against Gardevoir and Clefable.
