Question about Gym Mechanics

As I understand it, if you take over a gym and place one of your pokemon in it, the gym becomes a level 2 gym and any player on your team can come along, insert a second pokemon into the gym and the gym becomes a level 3 gym. Then any player on your team can come along and insert a third pokemon into the gym. But then, the next person on your team has to prestige the gym until it gains a level and then that player can insert a pokemon into the gym. I am pretty sure that is all correct.
But what I might not understand as well as I should is the reverse of that. If I beat down an enemy gym to level 1, so that there is only one pokemon remaining in that gym (lets assume its a Blissey), does a member of the team that still holds that gym by virtue of that Blissey have to prestige against that Blissey (which can be difficult) in order to insert a second pokemon into the gym, or does that member have an automatic insert? I think the answer is that the member of the team has to prestige against the Blissey. Please advise. Thank you.

They have to prestige.

In the case of a lvl10 dropping to lvl9, it could be that they only need to add 1000 prestige, or up to 10k, depending on how much the gym was dropped.

In short, if a mon is removed from a gym, then prestiging is required to place another in the gym again.

Thanks. That is what I thought and hoped would be the case.

The available openings are based on the amount of prestige the gym has.

https://pokemongo.gamepress.gg/gyms

When a player adds a pokemon, the gym gains 2000 prestige, which is enough to raise the gym from level 1 (0 prestige) to level 2 (2000 prestige), and level 2 to level 3 (4000 prestige), but higher than that and more prestige needs to be added through training.

The lowest pokemon is kicked out when the prestige drops below the level limit. At least some amount of training will need to be done to build the gym back up to allow a new pokemon in.

If a gym is knocked down to just 1000 prestige, they will need to gain 1000 prestige to bring it up to level 2, then a new pokemon can be added and the 2000 prestige for adding a pokemon will immediately bring it up to level 3.
