Im looking through my best pokemon for mewtwo raids, and the results were disheartening, I have several strong IV pokemon that counter it, but the problem is I dont have the candy to power them up. I was wondering would it be worth it to put rarecandy into pokemon for this raid? (Tyranitar and absol I can get from raids so I know not those)
Unlike Machamp raids, I think the thing you need to remember is that it won't just be you at the raid. Just lead with your Tyranitars, followed by your next best DPS pokemon. Mewtwo isn't overly hard and as long as you have 4-5 people with solid counters, you should be fine.
This is my team. I lead with the DPS and bulk at the end.
Ston edge is plenty good, if you can have Bite/Stone edge, go ahead and use it against Mewtwo. The difference is not that big, and if you power it up, it will probably be better than another neutral hitting pokemon. In the future you can charge TM it.
Provided you get fast tms, those are easy to get. Otherwise just hit him with what you have, focus on learning how to hit great-excellent balls.
No, Mewtwo is easy to catch. Mewtwo can be very reasonably beat with 3 trainers...all you need to be is the 5th or 6th trainer in a group, there you could use straight azumarill.
***My completely unnecessary mewtwo squad--did 40, 34, 34, 30 against C/SB and had 119 seconds left. If you know three other people you'll be fine. I didn't even change the Gengar and Mewtwos even though they aren't ideal against shadowball. Tap, tap, and then tap. Use dragons, use anything
I'm going to slightly differ from the general approach:
#1 6 with reasonably strong mon is a reasonable minimum. Mewtwo isn't actually particularly difficult, especially as Dark types tend towards sacrificing other stats for attack. However, people are idiots and will use Lugia/Aggron in bulk because they think that survivability is better than DPS
#2 Yes, you need a dedicated team. Dark Ttar, Dark Houndoom, even the glassy Dark Absol or STAB-less Dark Gyarados all work well. It's been some time since I've needed a team better than 'whatever is handy' for Mewtwo, but those are the ones that spring to mind. I also lead off with SB Gengar (not legacy) to get a few good whacks in.
#3 It depends on the counters you have. I honestly wouldn't put into them except possibly Ttar, as I recommend you use any raid passes on Saturday for Articuno with the up-to-40K XP (as I don't believe you're level 38 yet).
#4 The hard part of Mewtwo is the raid itself, and that's not that hard. If you beat him with 8 damage balls or more...you'll probably catch him. That's just as many as gym control and less than team contribution. If possible, I recommend you join a group OF NO MORE THAN SEVEN OTHERS to maximize ball chances while still being able to accomplish the raid reasonably.
#5 No, Machamp will not do well here, and we know that already.
#6 Assume your fellow trainers are idiots and plan accordingly. If you can manage 20% damage without their help, you're golden. (Use Calcy or Pokebattler to check.)
Go out on a sunny day and catch some high level Seedots. Evolve them into high level Shiftrys. They will do respectably against Mewtwo, even tolerating Focus Blast better than Ttar will (well, maybe still one shot KO). Houndours, even Pinsir/Scizor are good. Just be honest that you're not bringing 6 level 40 Ttars to the raid, and you'll do fine. And if it's Focus Blast, Gengar counters that nicely, with Sucker Punch/Shadow Ball or even Hex/SB.
Don't worry as much about IVs as about level for a one shot raid.
I think you can hold onto your rare candy and also save the stardust.
Mewtwo isn't really strong. I think you can beat it with three players, if they have maxed out perfect counters.
But in an EX Raid there will be more than three people. In fact, there will most likely be more than enough to fill atleast one lobby.
If so, you could probably show up with level 1 crap Pokemon and still get the chance to catch Mewtwo.
I haven't powered up any of my Mewtwo counters and has never had any problem beating it. Even when they put the EX raid at a time when most people are at work/school, we still had enough people to beat it without any problems.
So I wouldn't worry if I were you. The Pokemon you have are good enough, even if they aren't at a really high level.
The only thing that powering them up would potentially do is maybe get you an extra ball for damage.
And seeing as the catch rate of Mewtwo is quite high (up to 40.51%) one extra ball usually doesn't matter.
I've done 10 EX raids. Never had trouble beating it, even without great Pokemon, and at worst have had to throw 4-5 balls before catching it.
I think you'll do fine with the Pokemon you have.

On my second EX raid, against FB Mewtwo my team was SP/SB Gengar, SC/SB Gengar, B/C Gyarados, B/C Granbull, then a mix of Dragonites, Houndooms and Tyranitars with decreasing levels, including one with SE, and then even less optimal mons (2 teams). We were 7, had some spare time in the end and I got 3 damage balls, so I wouldn't worry too much with your team ;)
Get your most efficient mons up front and then fill up with whatever you have which is at the highest possible level.
