power up DT/C Gyarados?
I caught a level 30 100% IV Magikarp and got Dragon Tail Crunch for my moveset. Should I power it up to be a defender? I can normally take out a Dos before it gets off a hydro pump, and definitely before it gets off 2 outrages. Does crunch have value as a three bar move that deals 70 damage per atttack? It took off more than half of my 2250 Jolteon's HP when I missed the dodge.

Crunch gets a really bad rap because people don't typically do any research for themselves, but it's a great defense moveset. Dragon Tail is the important part, and it's a fantastic quick move for both attack / defense.
All the simulations I've seen show that DT / Crunch has a higher damage output on defense than DT / Hydro, and it's almost as good as DT / Outrage. Plus you'll never have the issue of being gimped in a matchup with an electric and not being able to fire off a charge move.
Really good moveset, one you should definitely be happy with. Power this sucker up and enjoy showing off your new Gyarados :)
Yeah, my initial reaction to Crunch was that I liked it, and then I saw the GP ratings and saw the endless stream of hate on the movesets, so I decided to do a little digging and research for myself ... what I found was that Crunch (when paired with Dragon Tail) is a very useful move, and is in fact significantly better than Hydro Pump - assuming perfect dodging of charge moves.

Have the same thing, as soon as my other projects will be finished, I'm gonna power him up. I was sceptical at first, because O looked a bit better in my eyes, but its actually too easy to dodge for my taste. Sometimes the Gyara fires away a Crunch right after 2 or 3 initial DT, so it can kinda surprise the attacker.
