Porygon2 & Dragonite Question

Hey so 2 questions because I didn’t want to eat up 2 posts:

1.) I just evolved a Porygon2 with 91% iv, 1439 CP and it got Hidden Power (Dragon) / Hyper Beam, is it worth powering up(I have about 40 Porygon candy)? Let’s assume I am asking in a vacuum and it’s not a question of do I need attackers/defenders, but do you think he is usable on offense, defense, or niche applications.
2.) I have about 225 Dratini candy and a 91% iv Dratini (around the 550 CP mark). My only Dragonite is an 89% iv DB/DC legacy moveset. He is around the 1900 CP mark. Should I invest in my existing Dragonite or look to evolve another one with a DT moveset.

Thanks for your help

1) I would probably leave it. Depends on your stardust count as well as your individual preference.
2) Def. power up the DB/DC to the max. Still the best offensive moveset in the game.

It depends if you want an attacker or a defender. IMO A DB/DC deserves to be powered up to lvl 30, which would leave him at ~3000cp. A great attacker, and easier to use than any DT Dragonite due to very short cooldowns on quick and charge moves. Should cost you around 60-70 candies and then you can save the rest for evolving your Dratini and see if you can get a good moveset on it.

I don't have any experience with Porygon2 and its hidden powers :) My guess is he is mostly a novelty to show off in a gym, and not usable for much else despite its decent stats.

Personally, I would not power-up any Pokemon that gets a future evolution. Granted, it could be upwards of 2 years away, but Porygon2 evolves to Porygon-Z in Gen 4. (I don't see how the game could survive that long a wait, so I expect the wait between generations to be shorter than the wait for Gen 2.)

Don't invest in Porygon, that's not his final evolution, he evolves again in gen 4, so it's good to have for pokedex completion, but investing stardust is a risk because when gen 4 rolls (in about a year at least), and you evolve him into Porygon-Z you might get a good or bad moveset and all that dust you invested would go to waste.

As for the Dragonite, definitely power him up, it's very valuable, as it's his best moveset and it cannot be obtained anymore.

Good point about the final evolution. Is this really Dragonite’s best moveset? A lot of people on here say DT is just so much better but I feel like those people don’t have a legacy moveset and might be rationalizing their own circumstances. I don’t mean to be cynical but it’s sometimes tough to get a read on Dragonite movesets after this update.

DT has higher DPS, but it's slower, DB is a lot faster so if you like to dodge, you can retain most of the DPS and still dodge (squeeze 3 to 5 DB in between attacks), where a DT dragonite can only squeeze a single attack between the defender's quick attacks, so if you dodge quick attacks, the DPS of DT goes down significantly.

1) I'm going to go against what everyone else is saying and say you should powerup your Porygon2 (as long as you aren't low stardust). You have the best move set on P2 and its a whole year till the next evolution comes out... Think about how much new stardust you will accumulate in the next year and having a strong P2 with perfect moves would be badass to showoff with.

I tend to favor rare mons over the "best" mons though. Thats just me

Well if the question was about should he power up the pokemon he likes, then he shouldn't even ask here, the answer is... power up whatever you like, regardless of usability in gym battles. Since he came here to ask about it, we can safely assume he's asking about usability in gym battles so the answer is very different.

  1. Porygon2 evolves into porygonZ in gen 4, and I think it's base special attack is equivalent to alakazam's (135 in the series?) if you're not huge on the moveset but want to power it up for the sake of powering up, you can always evolve it (eventually). To answer your question, seeing as hp dragon only hits Suer Effective on dragon types, I don't think the hp typing has a niche use. When battling is released, it will hit neutral on all types but fairy and steel, which is nice maybe? Hyper beam is tight though.

Another thought to keep in mind is that when porygon-Z is released (porygon 2's evolution in gen 4), Porygon2's candy requirement for evolution might drop from 50 to 25 just as seadra and crobats did.

  1. Definitely power up the db/DC first. I have one maxed out and I have a dt/or nearly maxed out and db/DC is my preference (dt/or still hits harder). As well, what if you evolve your dratini, one with 2% more ivs (1 more total), and you land an undesirable moveset?

Yea I agree. IV isn’t everything, and to your same point this DB/DC Dragonite was once an 89 iv Dragonair that I caught wild. I had the 91 iv Dratini and 89 iv Dragonair at the time and with the rarity of candies, I wasn’t going to harp on 2% iv points. Worked out fine with a great moveset. I will go ahead and max out the Dragonite and then evolve another.

  1. I would honestly use this porygon2 to prestige against dragonites...lol
  2. You probably are close to having 2 dragonites around level 30.
