Pokémon storage limit

Considering the recent additions to the game, Niantic should increase storage cap to 2000, don't you think?

I expect them to increase it by gen 4 release at the latest. If they can solve any potential performance issues related to the increase, it's just more money for them.

I'm sure they will after they increase the relevant Pokemon species to 50

Some people will misunderstand exaggerations like this so I feel the need to point out that are already more than 50 relevant pokemon. I'd like the number to be 150+ but that's complete utopia with the current battle system.

Finally I've been using gym coins on pokemon storage bc of Regice. Up to 1000 now, I can now see if someone had played twice as much as me, then 2000 would be needed. If you catch 300-400 on a weekend trip, might not want to immediately recycle

Indeed. I have 850 mons in keeping after a rigorous cleanup recently and I'll easily catch 300-400 in a day in the city. Being able to play for a few days without storage management would be nice.

Speaking about relevant Pokémon species the sad truth is that there arent even 50.
And even from this not even 50 the majority isnt that important:

1. profit from a double weakness/resistance in some rare cases (eg. Scizor vs. Eggy)

2. Are the easy-to-get 2and option (like Gyarados instead of 12x Kyogre)

3. Are not much better and a lot more expensive than the pokémon you already invested in (Moltres compared to Machamp against Steal/Ice. Or even mighty Rayquaza compared to Dragonite)

4. Weather boosts like rainy Scizor vs Mewtwo

5. not (really) relevant due to bad movesets like Ho-oh and Groudon

After this you are left with less than 10 Pokémon

You're confusing "relevant" with "top tier". Kyogre, Gyarados and Vaporeon for example are all relevant.
It's irrelevant whether the pokemon are crucial to have, not many pokemon are. The fact that they have a role in the meta by definition makes them relevant.

I counted by hand from the pokemon list and got to about 70. Some are debatable of course, but it's absurd to claim that there are less than 10 relevant pokemon. Raiding alone requires at least 30 species if you want to perform well.
