Pokemon go; an illusion

As a retired player i've been wondering why you people keep playing the game when there's no challenge. Why try and find 100% IV mons when you can take gyms and bosses down with anything? Why catch pokemon when you've already finished your dex etc.

The answer is that you hope one day the game will actually become a good game. So you're building your army, ready for when that moment comes. ready for when PvP comes out and your maxed out, 100% mewtwo might make all the difference.

In reality, this isn't going to happen. The game will never evolve into anything challenging. Besides the novelty of having to go outside and find pokemon it's a simple minded game, always will be.

I made this mistake too, of thinking i was preparing for something bigger. Eventually i realized this is all an illusion and it was time to concentrate on Real life.

Happy trails, travellers.

You answered it! Playing for PvP. That's all I care about. In my opinion the act of "catching" Pokémon is simply mind-numbing (got a plus for that) and all I care about is racking in stardust.

I think the current battle system is also dull: opponents are static (can't switch in and out, or dodge) and I think having the ability to switch Pokémon in and out will make a huge difference

Edit: just got the psychedelic reference ::))

My only goal is to complete the game by becoming level 40. I Don't like unfinished tasks, but I got to be honest with you. Once level 40 I won't miss the game a single bit.

As a sub urban player with limited Pokestops it is difficult however and I'm actually waiting on the next double XP event to go hardcore.

"Eventually i realized this is all an illusion and it was time to concentrate on Real life."

That's some deep philosophical stuff right there

He has been "retired" the past 8 days. Most of those days he has reported how awesome retirement has been. One catch and one spin a day can sustain the majority of PoGo accounts, so he is now a normal player instead of an avid one.

That's exactly why I play, to numb my mind away from real life.

"there's no challenge", "The answer is that you hope one day the game will actually become a good game"...

Erh, bzzzt, wrong. I play because it's fun and captivating.

Everyone has their own view and expectations on this game. In every game, there are some players are okay with the mechanics, adapt to it and play on for years, while some players just find the game not worth playing because they think it cannot/will not reach their expectation.

Well, you have to find the challenge by yourself in every game, including Pokemon Go, you find it less challenging not because it's not challenging, it's because you can't find one, or you are losing the motivation to go on in this game, in my opinion.

My current goal apart from reaching lvl 40, are to solo level 3 gyms as fast as possible, use a maxed out Lugia to truly 1v1 a Machamp raid, challenge lvl 4-5 raid boss with a few amount of people, and to max out several species of Pokemon. It may sound dull to you, but for me, I want to accomplish them.

On the other hand, for the other games I have been playing for years, I am becoming a really casual player, I still can see people finding those game challenging and becoming hardcore at them. Despite I am not really interested in those challenges, I know the game is still challenging, and there are new ones emerging, but I am not that enthusiastic to take the challenge anymore, simply because I lose the motivation to play the game. Probably one day, I would lose the interest in Pokemon Go too, but might not because the game is unchallenging, maybe it is just you who cannot adapt yourself to the game anymore.

But anyways, welcome back to real life, and hope that you can accomplish those real-life challenges you have always wanted to achieve.

If the old gym towers were brought back many here would be pleased. We have advantages that would give us more and more coins/stardust. We would claim prestiging is a skill, etc but sitting on a park bench (in a car) while tapping is the main talent. The challenge is being significantly better than those in our area without having the accruing (easy) advantages the old system provided

well... in some sense, prestiging is also tap (and swipe) your phone.

Hi! Cool post.

And... Btw if your not playing pokemon go, check out Clash Royale! Its a big challange!!!!

Admittedly i never reached level 40, so i did not complete that challenge. But even if i did there's no purpose to it to me, you can't even power up Pokemon after level 38! For me A challenge needs to have a purpose and a reward.

I know some of you play just to waste time and for some reaching level 40 is a worthy thing to do. But i think deep down most of you are waiting for it to get better in future ;)

In retirement you get quite philosophical about your past.

Thats not about pokemon go.
Its common sense that we wish things are gonna be better.

Have you ever noticed that you are in fact the only person on this forum ever using adjectives like amusing, comical, philosophical (without irony) in relation to yourself? Could there be a reason for this?

Edit: If it's any comfort, at least I find you interesting. You are a psychological textbook case, bordering on cliche. It's not every day one discovers such a thoroughbred troll.

I think you must have some discontent with your life so you are in desperate need of this game to give you something meaningful or some achievements to fill the void in your life. Your life has become mundane and it can't challenge you anymore. I would call it quarter life crisis or midlife crisis.
I know, real life is hard and game can give you instant gratification. But no matter how challenging a game is, it is just a game. You are not building something or changing people's life with it. If you need a game to give you purpose in life, you are the one who is delusional not PoGo itself.
Find a purpose or a challenge in real life, not in a game created by others.

It's only a game and not made to be a way of life. I'm a pretty casual player that loves the Pokemon world. I have an extremely busy life but I enjoy the occasional logging on and catching, spinning, or hatching something new. I've built a pretty substantial collection from doing that. A game doesn't need to be challenging to be considered fun. I've been playing since release and I'm still having fun.

The way you made your post sound is that you were perhaps playing far too much to the point where your real life started to suffer, which is obviously not the point of the game. If it gets to that point with anything, by all means stop playing and focus on what makes you happy. Again it's a free app game on the phone, it's not suppose to be an MLG sport or a career.

I did play a lot, yes. Not as much as some people but alot more than you.

Funnily enough you have a point, i had to miss a weekend away to get mewtwo (which i didn't even catch.) Interfering with real life like that is not good, but with the ex raid system (i've said from day 1 the way they've done ex raids is terrible) that sort of thing can happen.

IMO the game is not going in a good direction for it to be worth devoting time to.

My Mewtwo also ran away from me. If that's the worst thing that is going to happen to me all year, then I believe I am in great shape. We don't even really know how the EX raid system is going to truly work, as these last few weeks have been field tests. You are perfectly entitled to your own opinion though.

I've definitely seen some people who act like they are "professional" pokemon go players who take themselves way too serious. I saw this older couple at an entei raid that refused to join the group waiting and instead made their own private group for the six tablets they were carrying. I'd like to think they were catching entei for the accounts of their grandkids, but something told me they were not.

Somehow I get this feeling that you will be coming out of retirement, albeit briefly, on or around Halloween, and have a great time. But then, have to force yourself back into retirement because the front has been set. I could be wrong, as it is just a hunch.

Force myself to get out and walk. "Have to get into a few gyms for the day. .. Pokemon have been in that gym for over 10 hours, I'll go kick them out. ... Oh that gym has an opening available, I'll head there next."

The main concern is rare candy without a place to store it. Niantic being squirrelly about Mewtwo resigns those that missed it or never had a chance to spend $10 or so USD for bag space. Coupled with him being from Europe and getting Entei and Suicune first...I'd be kinda ticked and hold on playing for 4 to 6 weeks

Dude, you're the guy that had Mewtwo run away from. You can't really speak of yourself as an retired player if you only considered quitting one week ago.

Just had a quick look on your questions you submitted in the past. You seem to be the type of person that brings negative karma around and always considers the glass to be half empty. Time to step up your lifeplan and leaving gaming behind for a while mate.

One can hardly blame Mew2 for not wanting to stay with a trainer like that. Well done, kitty.

I've started recently (March), and I set smaller goals: Find the best of every species and catch as many for the dex as I can. Find every shiny there is. Use various mons in raids instead of the usual ones. Put stuff in gyms to show off instead of actually expecting my mons to defend. Conquer gyms to get coins, sometimes to turn the whole area into my team's color. And most importantly: to keep me from getting bored while I take my daily 2 hour walks.

Wow, this is so spirited. Could this be the first chapter of your "Memoirs of a troll"?

Since there is no real endgame, you may want to create your own goals that are appropriate for you. If you're unable to do that, take a break.

For me, this game has become a social game. We just had a hotpot party last Saturday, lol.
Anyway, i am never a gamer myself so i don't need an end game for this game whatsoever. Living in a small town for grad school, this game just makes my experience better.
Yes, i have lots of amazing 100% pokemons(even a couple of most powerful legendaries). I will max them out to solo level 3 raid boss. But i only consider this temporary because there will always be more legendaries, more powerful pokemons in the future. You will always want more even when you have the best already. My life can't revolve around this game because i am not a professional gamer. As a graduate student, i can have some time for this but i can't imagine playing this game as much if i get a job in like Apple or Intel.
So for me, i would enjoy the experience as much as i can without thinking about future. Who knows what would happen but i do know it is fun to play this game with social aspects right now.
A quote from Bojack Horseman: Well, That's the problem with life, right? Either you know what you want, and then you don't get what you want. Or you get what you want, and then you don't know what you want.

We are all closet hoarders.

We like the excitement and anticipation of even a possibility of finding something rare so we can brag about it and then stare at our phones in admiration because we got something special. It is like finding treasure. A perfect IV. A shiny. A 0%er. Mew2. A new collection. Badges. Awards. Coins. yadayada. And hope for PVP so we can be kings and queens of the universe with a best army.

Well, let's see if you stop playing once Gen 3 rolls in. ;)

Up

I also quit for months after i finished gen 1. When gen 2 came out i occasionally played, not very often.

I started playing full time again cos of raids, not gen 2. Raids have had their day for me, especially right now since Europe have Suicine.

So i don't think i'll be playing that much even when gen 3 appears ;) The game needs to come up with something fresh.

If you have quit the game then why are you still here on these forums?

My point of view is that the game even didn't start. It is not even the version 1.0.0., but still 0.7.x, which means in a "programmers language" that it is still the "beta" and in a "preparation stage". So we are testing the model and preparing the base - the corpus on which the game will run.

I think the first number used to correspond with the number of weeks it had been out, but it has drifted apart over time. I was expecting the leading 0 to tick over to 1 at the one year mark.

Pretty much came to the same conclusion, as I was basically just playing to watch numbers on my screen go higher and hoping for 100% IVs (pure OCD). I gave up on PvP a while ago as they can barely make gyms and events work; making every different make and model of phone plus OS, etc, etc connect to play against each other is just beyond their capabilities. Limiting the dust output from gyms slowed that number climb and made it even less interesting. The raids were fun for a minute but it got old quickly and by the time Raikou came out in my area, getting raid groups together became next to impossible (and I'm not even rural or even small city). Then we found out that Mewtwo will be invite only, based on criteria that was vague and ill-defined. I'm now spoofing worse than ever before, mostly curious to see exactly how blatant I can be before I get banned. I used to mainly spoof around my own city just to catch stuff and grind dust but did raids in person and never took down gyms; now I'm teleporting for raids, and autowalking on my iPad to hatch eggs while I do chores and watch tv. It's literally walking my avatar around in circles for hours on end and still no ban. I seriously WANT to get banned and can't! Niantic DGAF!

Seems a bit much, but I think they are way out of bounds by not having a sale on bag space. Game could really be unplayable for some free or low spenders that are not in the front of the EX raid line

Up

One person in my old raid group spoofed nearly all the time, he'd even spoof for other players if they wanted. He never got banned, Niantic don't care. SO you should be safe, spoofer ;)

Niantic are all about making money, not cutting out cheaters or providing a quality game.

I play because I get to meet lots of people (the game has made me way less shy).
I play because I want to reach certain goals in the game.
I play because it helps me get more exercise.
I play because I want to catch em all.

But, most importantly.....

....I play because it's fun and I like it.

I'll bite...

I haven't posted here in a long long time for people who recognize my name/postings...but ultimately, I think if the game stops being fun, we should just stop or at least, YOU should stop...I don't play much at all anymore and don't care even if I don't get 50 coins, but won't be hating on people who still enjoy it...

I'm near 39 now, but a major problem I see is Pokecoins also have little/no value now IMO. I have 8000+ and don't care to spend it since I don't like waiting to do raids and hatching is lame.

I agree with the OP though that there is little need of stronger Pokemon and this has been beaten to death after raids came out. Near all goals were gone for a lot of people (mostly high IV, high level, rare Pokemon, etc...)...so if anything, I'd guess high level people have slowed down (have 6000+ trainings/battles).

I don't anticipate ever a good PvP system since that's too hard to do IMO. I am playing Sword Art Online: Memory Defrag now and even though it has P2W in it, it still is more enjoyable and has an insane amount of updates, new things going on, tower clearing events, ranking events, guild events, etc...Since playing that, I'm surprised how poor Niantic has managed this Pokemon property honestly. 1 whole month of 1 (ONE) Legendary dog? Seriously? I'm surprised the 1st raid bosses are still here too.

All this said, some people like the social aspect and that's good, but for me, I just play less and am ok with that...Not like I am focusing on my Real life more, I just play something else.

I believe once you find another game to play, or something else to do, etc...this will get shelved...

That's ok, we had our fun. I've been in just collect mode personally since the raids came out and that's ok with me...

I'm also sad to say that these posts seem to be the only messages I seem to posts to now since like a lot of people NOT responding, a lot of old timers are probably gone/retired already...

Just saying to the OP and a lot of folks, you're not "that" alone...
