PoGo is (and always have been) broken!

Let me explain...
I think Niantic messed up big time from the very beginning and now it's obviously too late to change anything.

Pokemon (both in anime & original games) has always been about a bond with your pokemon.
Technically you could 'catch'em all' but you could only invest time in developing (leveling up) a small bunch of them and making them stronger, eventually forming a special bond with your favourite ones. That's how it worked and it was awesome.

Now, in PoGo it really, really sucks that you can quite easily collect EVERY pokemon there is and fully power them up just as easily if you want to.
Beyond a level 30 I suppose we're all pretty much identical trainers - same pokemon powered up, counters to everything, all of the best ones collected, all of the weaker ones rejected. What's the point of that? How would PVP even work while EVERYBODY has the very same pokemon equally strong?

They could totally do it differently. For instance evolving a pokemon could depend on both distance walked with him/her as a buddy and a number of successful (!) gym battles where he/she participated.
If I was to walk 125 KM with my Charmander to evolve him into a Charizard I wouldn't have 5 different Charizards that I don't care about like I do now, just because I visited a nest a couple of times. They could even leave the candy system for 'small powerups' in order to make a unevolved form a little stronger so they could actually win some battles.

I'm level 33 and walked about 1200-1300 KM so far. This would mean that by this point I'd have about 9-10 pokemon really good at best, that I invested my time and resources in and that's it! It would not be obvious for everyone that I have Charizard, Venusaur and the Blastoise or Rhydon and obviously Golem and a couple of Dragonites. You get what I mean? It would be picking and choosing, making sacrifices, planning strategy, spending more time developing your actual favourite ones because pokemon is not (and shouldn't be) just about the math such as highest max CP, highest DPS and so on - it's also about which monsters you simply like.

P.S It is still sort of fun to play the game and I try to preserve as much of this original spirit as possible i.e. fully powering up really weak mons just because I like them :) but man... they could have made it so much better! Such a shame!

I think that they have made us choose 'favourites' that we get attached to.
The means by which they have done it is stardust, candy and legacy movesets

Early on it felt as if you could have all the mons you like, but as you level up you realise that you can only select a few chosen mons to come with you throughout your PoGo journey.
There is not enough stardust to level up one of everything, never mind one of each moveset of each type.

We are limited to how many we can journey with...it just uses a different method to achieve it.
The bonus is that we can change our mind, and start to bring in another newer favourite if we wish - we are not locked in.

Clearly people get attached to their mons even in PoGo - or we would not have all the uproar about specific movesets on specific mons and their 'grading' on this site or others.

Think DB/DC dragonites...people clearly are attached to them. You can tell which mons players are attached to, as they take the ratings personally and fight for their fav to have a better rating.

We are attached to our mons, and we can only bring so many along for the journey - it is just done in a different way.

That is how I see it anyway.

There should be additional way to train our mons, like rising one of their base stats. If you could do it only for one mon of one kind at a time you would surely get attached to it. You want a "healthy" Cloyster or "aggressive" Steelix? You can have one - through spending resources on "special" training, sending a mon to a "quest" of some sort or meeting other criteria. There are many possibilities to do that but if Niantic is going expand PoGo experience in such ways it's another question.

I wish they'd implement something that could make my - for instance - Wigglytuff extra strong compared to anybody else's Wigglytuff provided that I spend some extra time & resources on him/her.

What you are asking for is only suitable for longtime Pokémon lovers and fans. The current game is to appeal to the masses. They won't make as much money if the game was designed like you have described. It's quantity over quality for them. The more players there are, the higher chance they can sell sponsored PokeStops. You think Starbucks would sponsor PokeStops if the player base was only 1 Mil? 10 Mil? globally? The answer would be a big fat NO. PoGO is not like the regular Pokémon games and it never will be. It will not have the depth of the previous games. When it becomes too complicated to casual gamers, they will stop playing.
