Player Motivation
Well, now that the new gym update rush has worn off, a few thoughts:
1) The 50 coin cap is terrible. Don't think it will last, but it sucks all the motivation over having Pokemon in different gyms when one Poke can fairly easily reach the 50 my themselves. This really sucks for rural players.
2) Likewise there's no motivation to attack gyms and feeding berries now has the perverse incentive of trapping your teammates Pokemon far beyond the point where they can be beneficial.
So I think Niantic needs to do three things:
1) First, reward players for attacking gyms (as many others have stated).
2) Offer a secondary benefit (candy or dust) for holding a gym once the 50 coin cap has been reached. Raising the cap back to 100 would be nice too.
3) This will sound weird, but I think the motivation loss rate in gyms needs to be greatly increased. That will balance out the additional rewards and give a positive incentive to feed Pokemon.
These three things will give players motivation to both attack and try and keep gyms as long as possible. It will also make the game more challenging, but with the lure of greater rewards.
Overall I still love the new system in theory, but today I woke up and have nothing to do but wait for one of my eight Pokemon to return to me. If more than one return, I get nothing for them and if I feed a gym, I'm likely screwing over my teammate.
Changes will come, but I guess I'm just saving dust and berries until then

Agreed...I normally knock out all the local gyms everyday, but today maybe the 1st day I don't do this...
Reason being is because people can still feed berries to mons when you attack. Attacking gyms also takes very long if they keep doing this...
I agree motivation should drop tons faster since 1 coin/10 minute makes it easy to get 50 as long as you last overnight.
I'm hoping no one attacks the gyms so all these people there will get no payout since no one wants to attack their gyms...
The 50/day sorta sucks since I had one last till 11:15pm or so which would have netted me 50, but got me 0 since I already got 50 for the day...
1.) Yes at least grant exp how it waa before when u attacked but u didn't take over a gym. Also I think there should be some kind of stardust/coin reward (even if small) for taking over a gym.
2.). Totally agree. I think they will put the cap back to 100 and possibly increase the rate to 20 or 30 minutes fairly soon....but if not like u said give something else if they are unwilling to give coins.
3.). I disagree. It needs to balanced so people don't have an incentive not to power up defenders over 3k.. maybe a balance between the two rates? Also it appears that feeding mons now contributes much more to gym points than battling so that is a reward of an unknown quantity besides the extra items. And they already increased the amount if motivation lost when attacking. I feel like the time to solo a Max gym is about right now... anything easier would completely defeat the purpose of powering defenders at all
