Personal damage balls

I thought I understood the damage balls formula but now I'm confused. I did 2 raikou raids today. My lineup for both raids was the same : dragonite DT/O, 3 ground rhydons and 2 rock golem in that order, all lvl 30 or higher.
The first raid we were 5 and the boss went down with 40 sec on the clock while my last golem had half a bar of HP. I got 3 damage balls. The second raid we were the same 5 ppl joined by additional 3 so total of 8. He went down with ~120 sec left and I was just starting with my first golem (5th Pokemon). I got only 1 damage ball. It is my understanding that >5% damage give 1 ball, >10% give 2 balls and 20% 3 balls. I find it unlikely that I did less than 10% damage in the second raid given that the 3 who joined were lower levels than the original 5 and couldn't contribute that much.
What am I getting wrong?

The lower level players might be using optimal counters too.

FunkySho's vid/testing pointed more towards 5%/15%/20% as +1/+2/+3 damage balls...

It's near impossible to get +2 or +3 balls in larger (maybe 8-10+ groups) if other people are high level and have ideal counters...

Maybe in your 1st group, since it was a small group, someone else had to rejoin so they loss all their damage bonus...

Yeah, if the others in the smaller group had to rejoin then it would have reset their damage contribution. With more people, if your original group members did not need to rejoin then that would also take away from your balls.

Yyyyup. As an outside amateur observer I would say this mystery is solved. In a group of 5 against a Legendary somebody is re-entering with a second squad and starting damage again at 0. At least one person unless you can prove they didn't.
With a group of 8 there's a good chance everyone survived with their original 6.

You really have no idea how much damage the other players are doing and if they are re entering or not. I did a Moltres raid with 15 lower level players and ended up with 3 balls, it depends more on the composition and decision making of the group than anything you are doing.

In a Zapdos raid I did two weeks ago, I was the only Instinct out of 8 players, and I ended up with 3 damage balls and 3 balls for Contribution by Team. I just have a really good team vs Zapdos. (4 Rock/Rock Golems and 2 Ttars with Stone Edge, all 6 Pokémon are level 30+)

(And no, I did not catch the Zapdos. Even with hitting it with Golden Razz's and Excellent shots. Razzum Frazzum stick that (censored) PoGo stick up Niantic's (censored) sideways.)
