Optimal offensive movesets vs most DPS movesets

So I was thinking, are movesets that require spamming while eating all the damage really the best movesets?

Example: say I like to be potion efficient and fast at defeating a defender, if I can hit two zen heabutts and dodge the quick attack, but only one confusion without getting hit, wouldn't this make confusion/future sight a worse Moveset?

I ask the question because what I want from a best offensive Moveset is deal as much damage while avoiding the most damage possible myself, and if the difference between a, let's call it optimal offensive moveset compared to the highest dps one is about 10% (say 5 more seconds battling) but the damage avoided allowed me to battle another mon or avoid having to revive the attacker and heal it, I'd definitely prefer the optimal moveset, because it actually saves me more time when considering the other moveset will have me wasting time reviving and healing (and collecting)...

I know it might be a hard thing to consider for a ranking or tier list, but then we're left with "best offensive" movesets that aren't really the best....does that make sense to you? I'd just like to be able to tell better movesets apart when considering all that actually goes on when battling and after battles.

So you should use a given rating for cycle damage on movesets, and adjust it, giving bonus for short cooldown on quick- and charged attacks. This makes dodging easyer.

There is no good formula for attacking damage with dodging, because this depends on defending pokemon. I think, you will have to use a battle simulator and check "dodge all" button, and look on some typical matchups.

And that is why we follow Gamepress.

Most other sites have a 'best moveset' list that is merely a spreadsheet that calculates the highest dps if you just stand and deliver damage.

Gamepress takes into consideration other factors, including possibility to dodge, full moveset rotation cycle, wasted energy when waiting to use a charge move etc etc.

This is why we wait a little longer than some sites for the answer...and is exactly why it is a more robust list to follow rather than a simplistic spreadsheet based dps list.

BTW You want Pc...not ZH, or Confusion. - based on your reasoning.

For example...sure, C/Fs on Alakazam is more dps...but Pc/Fs is the optimal moveset.

Thanks, somehow I thought it was also Gamepress' opinion that confusion/future sight would be the better one, very informative, thank you. I had espeon on my mind in the example, but your clarification still works flawlessly haha...

They are still in the process of updating the movesets for individual mons.
It has taken a little longer than other sites - but it is worth the wait, for all the reason you have shown concern for.

...but it is always soooooo worth the wait.

Yeah, Gamepress takes into account multiple subjective things aside from the numbers - if the movesets have plus matchups vs. common defenders or are weak vs. common attackers, if it's something that has to be dodged often raising likelihood of missed dodge, etc.

I'm sure they take long to put together b/c a lot of work goes into them. Lots of variables to consider.

"Best" is an impossible Goal

Because it falls into 3 subjective categories
1) Best in terms of fastest kills (IE Real Life time spent in battle)
2) Best in terms of Potion Usage
3) Best in terms of hps left to beat the next pokemon with.

So they have to use a bit of judgement between these conflicting goals

2) Best in terms of Potion Usage
3) Best in terms of hps left to beat the next pokemon with.

Seems to be the same goal for me. If i have most hps left, i need least potions.

So they have to use a bit of judgement between these conflicting goals

This will always be a compromise, if they stick to their "A to F" - Rating. I really want to know how they rate
Dragonites DB/DC vs DT/O and
Alakazams C/FS vs PC/FS.
in both cases, we have relevant attackers with a strong slow moveset or a quick but weaker moveset.
