Niantic's inconsistencies makes them look dumb
In the middle of this Kanto event they are going to have a community day featuring ....... a Johto mon Mareep (?!??)
Seems like a missed opportunities to align activities and make Niantic actually look like they are actually planning ahead and coordinating their efforts rather than making random, disorganized decisions.
This is my top four Kanto mon that could have been featured in the community event instead:
1) Omanyte, bring back Omastar rock moves for 3 hours!
2) Machop, Machamp is one of the most meta relevant Gen 1
3) Grimer
4 ) Charmander, shiny charizard with a new stronger move would have been incredible.

I, for one, will be relieved to get a three-hour break from this week of Kanto, and for the chance to stock up on candy for one of the rarest mons in the game. I don't think it's 'dumb' of Niantic.
And you'll probably just have to wait a month for a CD featuring Lizard Lizard (and Charizard with Blast Burn).
I think these guys are very smart. They have millions playing and trying to guess the next move. There is an entire industry around speculation and they control leaks in an amazing fashion.
As far as the event I was guessing water version 2.0 and they hit a home run. They gave us a week of having to work on Magicarp candy and random ghosts then cut them loose so casual players could get. Home run across the board.
Mareep is a hard one in this area. I have 83,404 captures and a total of 3 Ampharos. He really is a rare beast.
True, mareep are rare and it's a good choice for a community day. My point is that it doesn't coordinate well with a Gen 1 event, which means they are probably just not planning ahead and being sloppy, throwing whatever the come up with out there because Pokemon popularity will make it a success whether it was a good idea or not. I have been unimpressed with Niantic as a company overall, they got lucky and won the lottery by getting the rights to use beloved trademarked Pokemon characters in a game that otherwise would not be a very good game. They have gotten better, the in-game communication took a long overdue huge leap forward this year. However, their learning curve seems to be painfully prolonged, fortunately the huge money that goes with the Pokemon franchise has allowed them that extended time to learn.
