Need advice on evolving Feebas

I have walked my buddy Feebas well over 20 km and it now can be evolved to Milotic. Does anyone know if i MUST evolve it now or can I change my buddy now and evolve the same 20km+ Feebas at a later date? If I change would I have to walk it yet another 20km? The rational is that I suspect (guess?) that the next major Quest will have a task to "evolve a Feebas (as well as evolve a Magikarp or Wailmer given the amount of those spawning during the water festival). Thus I am hoping to use the current 20km +'buddy' for the task later. It may be some time before another quest begins so I don't really need to keep walking a Feebas. Thanks

If you click on the Feebas you walked, the meter should show full and that should stay recorded. I haven't tested it myself so IDK for sure, but I'd strongly guess that it's safe to switch it out. Just make sure you properly mark which one you walked so you don't accidentally transfer it.

Evolved 2, walking the third now. Finish the 20K with THAT Feebas, then switch buddies if you want. At any time in the future you can evolve THAT Feebas assuming you have 100 candy

You are safe to switch, the fish will keep the green bar as progressed walking. I have a perfect Feebas that I walked 20km with stashed away and waiting for a CDay or quest or something, I had evolved a 96% IV Feebas prior for the DEX entry
