My own speculation/thoughts on how motivation/cp should work

The internet is full of buzz, but right now all we know for sure, is that we won't know for sure until it actually rolls out. And who knows, they may end up changing it a few days after if people hate it (it's happened before)

So this is just my personal theory. I think it is going to work on similar principles as prestiging. Here is a basic oversimplification.

If the attacking mons cp is higher than that of the defender, the defender loses minimal motivation.

If the attacking mons cp is lower than that of the defending, it will lose moderate motivation

If the attacking mons cp is less than half of defenders. It loses severe motivation.

I think it has already been confirmed that as motivation drops, so will their CP. This would mean that as you battle thru the gym, as the various defenders motivation drops, you would need to switch out your attack squad accordingly to achieve maximum motivation loss. This also will allow lower level players without a team of high level attackers, to be more relevant to the gym meta.

Again, this is all just my rant about something I was musing in my head.

I sincerely hope they don't make all attacking work on the prestiging half-CP principle, that would purely disincentivize powering up attackers beyond ~1200, and be a huge slap in the face to anyone with attackers they've powered up, to now have them be less effective than they were at a lower CP.

I didn't mean to put forth the idea that high cp attackers would me useless. Motivation would still drop either way, it would just be faster when using lower CP pokemon.

Sometimes I'll run across a gym that is filled with lowerish cp defenders in the 1500-2500 range. I almost feel like I'm cheating by using attckers in the 2900-3100 cp range.

At least I would have a bit more motivation to switch up my attack team a bit, to better suit the gym I was facing.

Then there are still raids where you want to have the strongest possible Pokémon. That's where powered up Pokémon would stay relevant in this scenario.

I hope not actually. What would be the point of powering up? I guess they can add a little bonus if you manage to beat the pokemon with lower cp. But it shouldn't be double the amount, like prestiging was.
(edit after reading your post again: It should be fine if high cp attackers cause a decent amount of motivation loss though. As long as using them doesn't mean you have to spend more time battling the gym)

Even if raids exists, you can only do that once a day (for free). So what are you gonna use your best (and likely favourite) pokemon for?

This is such an original idea. Never thought of it. Never really realized it while reading the previous 10 posts talking about this totally new idea.
