Maxing out mons

I have never maxed out a single pokemon until about a month ago, because I always thought it wasn’t worth the huge stardust and candy investment for the small DPS increase. And even then, the first mon I maxed out last month wasn’t an offensive mon but a Blissey.

So I’ve only just maxed my first offensive mon, my Dragonite from the old gym system. I maxed her out for Lati@s raids.
Latias: To be able to dodge Outrage from Latias raid boss without glitch.
Latios: To tank (or dodge if possible) more Dragon Claws.
Next to be maxed will be Rayquaza, Mewtwo, Ttar.

Why do you max out mons? Are they for a particular raid boss, or for general purposes? Do you look out for future generation competition before maxing out a pokemon?

I have yet to power up anything beyond level 30, but once I reach level 38, I may max out a Machamp. Already have a 98% one, just caught a perfect Machop, have 500 Machop candy and of course, Machamp is crucial in every gym battle.

Although I have just enough Dratini candy to max out a level 30 Dragonite, my best is only 91%. With 80 Larvitar candy, I will not be maxing out my only Tyranitar any time soon (getting a second is more important).

How about my 96% Gardevoir with Cn/DG? Would be keen, but have only 90 candy. In contrast, I have more than enough candy to max out my 96% Exeggutor (Cn/SoB), 96% Vaporeon (WG/HP) and 93% Gyarados (WF/HP), but the current (and future) metagame does not justify the investment.

Edit: I have a million stardust and 180 Rare Candies. Not considering legendaries as 150 RC is simply too much.

Gyarados might be worth the investment. We still don't know the exact mechanics, but MegaGyarados should be a beast (and gains a dark typing, so B/C becomes competitive with Ttar).

Definitely max out the Machamp. You will use it in every gym battle and a handful of raids.

Quite a while ago hatched a 100% larvitar, convinced me to max my first one, pretty (very) useful.

Next, had a 14/15/14 Raikou...supreme counter to Kyogre and then for Lugia’s brief return. Very valuable.

Had two Dragonites at 3325, then after Dratini day I got all the candy I would ever need—maxed them both. Currently very useful.

After much bad luck with Mewtwo IVs, finally got a 15a/11/15 which was good enough for me to finally max. Very good addition.

Got a 15a/12/15 Kyogre, I was pretty convinced in how much better it would be than Gyarados...after maxing, very pleased with its power and bulk.

Next maxed 14a/12/11 SC/ShB Gengar, had candy and so many dust events made it easy at the time. Pretty good firecracker.

Currently trying to max Gardevoir, at 2816...have 100%. Maxing Salamence, at 3363 15/14/14. My Rayquaza is creeping up, at 3400 after getting extra candy from transfers.

However, rare candy going to Groudon, very convinced after battling Jolteon in sunny weather...Groudon is the hero of all heroes. Have another Tyranitar at 3463, would max it if I had candy (many Mewtwo raids lately).

Gradually started maxing, then I starting rushing to 40 and I decided to speed up my maxing. If you have great candidates, then a very good idea as you advance in level

I have only maxed out mons of personal preference. Stuff that is very useful will get levelled somewhere between 35 and 38.
I maxed out my two favourite legendaries Moltres and Raikou, my long-time generalist C/SoB Exegguttor, a 100% Flareon because it's a hundred per cent and it took the longest time to get a good Flareon. The last pokémon I have maxed out is my first good IV Dragonite because it's a nice generalist.

I will probably loosen my standards for maxing out because I feel that I have more than enough stardust left that is without purpose.

Definitely if you have the surplus stardust. I usually don't but once Latias hits, followed by 3 Regis that I have no interest in, I will have 4 months of stardust and RC and I can put towards maxing out a few favorites

I feel the same regarding the Regis and have not decided yet about Latios (currently Latias as raid boss).
I keep thinking about Kyogre because I want to clear more rare candy from my bag and don't want to invest any into Rayquaza. Having the entire weather trio at high level would be nice.

I really enjoy Latios' dragon moveset so I powered him up to 30 but if you have a Dragonite with DB/DC, you are already set

Reasons I max:
I like seeing the mons at their fullest potential.
I collect maxed mons.
Non-maxed mons rarely have a chance to make my A team.

Earlier I heavily considered general useability and future-proofness. 1-2 Machamps, Tyranitars, Dragonites are still the best non-legendary candidates.

I max out mons I personally like. Granted they also tend to be the really good ones. Dragonite with DT/O and DT/DM, Ttar with B/C, Blissey with ZH/DG, 2 Machamp C/DP, Gary with WF/HP and Golem with RT/SE.

When it comes to dust, I like to keep over 300k, but if I get a mon I want and have the resources, I will lvl up.

I max mon that are useful attackers with very high (>92%) CP.
Examples are TTar, Dragonite, Machamp, Venusaur, Raikou, Entai, Arcainine (was my first perfect and was meta relevant then).

I max generalists and perfects. So far I maxed Mewtwo, 2 dragonites and a perfect FP venusaur. I have a perfect muk and steelix which I'm slowly maxing. I'm also considering maxing non CD shinies, already maxed my first one, a shiny dusclops, and I'm slowly taking my shiny aggron up. I still can't bring myself to power up a 27 CP shiny luvdisc but I might do it if I will ever reach 1 M dust.

few months ago I wasn't maxing anything, only to a breakpoint or bulkpoint. Recently, I started maxing some since gen3 is pretty new and I got almost everything of value to 30-35 with a lot of spare dust and rare candy. Not a total max out but lv39 actually. So far I got

Rayquaza, Kyogre, Groudon, Raikou,
Tyranitar, Dragonite, two Machamp (one with Counter one with Karate Chop), Blissey, Venusaur(Frenzy Plant)

I will probably include Moltres, Omastar(Rock Throw) and Gengar(Shadow Claw) to 39 echelon from 37, when my dust count goes above 1M again.

Sceptile is the most viable 100% percent I have, ahead of Scizor.
I've powered him to level 37.5 and will eventually get him to 40 but it's not urgent. The rest of my Pokemon are 35 or below.

I wish Niantic would allow level 40 Pokemon to freely switch between movesets (including Legacy moves!). It would be a nice incentive to keep on grinding out your favorite Pokemon. Right now, the stardust cost to max just doesn't feel worth it

Literally just reached level 38 this morning. First thing, maxed out my 96% and 98% Dragonites. The 96% was my first good pokemon, and I did that first for sentimental reasons. Both are great generalists, and are strong against Lati@s (especially the devastating Solar Beam attack).

Not sure what's next. My Mewtwos are both in the 80% range, and while I have PS/SB powered up to level 36, probably will stop there for now. C/P is only powered up to level 30 for Machamp raids, but those won't be needed as much given the crazy number of Machops popping up this week.

Maybe the best Rayquaza I have will be powered up, but first I'm powering my next best one to 30 to help out with Lati@s. Bringing both up together will be a real strain on my rare candy intake.

Or, I could power up a good Kyogre (96%, 13 Stamina). Currently at 33. Will probably wait to see what's after the Lati@s twins before I make that call. And having sent some of my weaker legendary pokemon to the professor, I now have a few candy for them to get a mild bump without touching the rare candy, so should do that first.

Playing in a city is the easiest answer. I have twice that many maxed, although I did grind like a dog to get there.

I max them out (for current lvl 35) for gym battles and raids, but I focus on my 100%s first and then on the lower IV ones. I haven't maxed out any legendary (Moltres or Lugia or Mew) because they're low IV and cannot really find a use for them yet aside from being part of my collection. I do take into account future evolutions too, but primary reason to power up is raid and gym fights.

I max out mons that I know I won't replace. That being said, I generally don't max out mons that are useful for a particular raid boss but subject to substitution, i.e. I didn't max out any ice types during Rayquaza, and only spent stardust on Articuno and Gardevoir and used level 30s for it since I knew those two mons wouldn't be replaced like Jynxes would. Sure, it meant I couldn't duo Rayquaza during its window, but I saved plenty on Stardust.

As more raid bosses come out and time passes, my account should come closer to becoming optimal versus raid bosses because certain maxed mons rival level 30 optimal counters in performance, e.g. a maxed Mewtwo vs. a level 30 Dragonite against Latios.

Yeah, I look for future competition, and I don't think it's a good idea to max a full squad of a mon since it's a permanent investment. If you're worried about Frenzy Plant Venusaur being replaced, for example, max one or two and not six, then you can still put it in a team of 6. For example, I've maxed Kyogre even though Palkia might eventually surpass it, but I'm not powering up more than one (or two) of them.

When it comes to non-legendaries I think it's good to be a little more stingy with your stardust. I didn't max out a Dragonite because I find that dragons face stiff competition as specialists and generalists. For example, against Rayquaza they faced competition from Ice types for dps and Aggron/Gardevoir for survivability. Against Latios, they face competition from Mewtwo/Tyranitar/Gardevoir/Gengar. Additionally, Rayquaza does the job exactly the same but a whole lot better. Finally, Rayquaza/Mewtwo make better generalists than Dragonite, with Latios making a better gym sweeper - the only case I would favor Dragonite would be a DT/DC set for gym defense.

With scanners gone and Gen 3 being pretty old now (as well as with many egg events and current walking distance boost), I find that for non-legendaries it's becoming more about stardust and less about candy. For myself personally I'm not really lacking candy for any gen 3 non-legendary (except Bagon somewhat), so stardust can be spent a little more freely since it's generally easier and quicker to accumulate stardust than it is to accumulate the 248 Rare Candy necessary to max a legendary from level 20. That being said, I'm starting to max a second Gardevoir, Metagross, Salamence, Gyarados, and 4th Tyranitar.

I max out Pokemon because I wouldn't have any other use for the dust and candy and because I think it's fun. Why keep a couple million dust and 500+ candy for a Pokemon if you have plenty of said high IV Pokemon at lvl 30-35 but not yet at 40?

I brought a lvl 30 Tyranitar to lvl 40 just an hour ago, because I felt like it (and ofcourse had plenty of candy and dust to spare) and because I have a Mewtwo raid tomorrow after Community Day.

With Machamp I got 6 of them lvl 30 before powering the 2 93IV to lvl 36 for breakpoint.

I max out a lot more than most people.

I usually stick to this:
For Mewtwo: First 3 , no matter IV (and 67% aint "bad")
For legendaries: 1-4 of best ones (lowest IV so far 84%)
For useful species: usually 96%
For those I early on invested a lot stardust in: About 75%
Cool legacy moves: No limit (34% Body slam Snorlax)
A few fun ones (100% Shuckle, Arbok, Butterfree etc)
Some good IV future projects (Piloswine, Murkrow)

For me maxing out my mons is the biggest motivation at the moment. I usually use up dust as soon as I get it.

Change of plan: Just caught and evolved this, I'm gonna max this before anything else I listed above.
