Max out attackers?
I used to followe the advice that is regularely given here, and powered up defenders and to left attackers at level 30 or 31.
This week i decided to change that. I powered up a ES/SoB-Exeggutor and my DB/DP-Dragonite to level 36.5 / 35 and took down a 10er gym last night.
Yeah. It feels so good.
Is there a difference between a 24xx Exegguttor and a 27xx one? Between a 30xx Dragonite and a 33xx one? Yes, indeed!
These 10% more CP that translate to 15% more fighting power are clearly noticable.
Defending is not an active part of the game at the moment. When defending, you do not get feedback how strong your defender is. You will not get the information how many potions and revives attacker had to invest.
Attacking this gym was 45 minutes of active gameplay. This gameplay should be fun, not pain. It was fun. It was a lot more fun than the permanent fear of missed dodges when using week pokemon.
Pokemon is a game and should provide pleasure. Of course, you can invest your dust and candy maximal efficient, only maxing out defenders. Then, you maybe get the pleasure to earn some more coins. Last week, i priorized the pleasure of active gym battling.

Its just that extra 10-15% is usually overkill
When i can take out one defender more, i need less potions and revives. It may be overkill in a 1:1 situation, bit not in a big gym.
so people focus on defenders. Nothing wrong with upgrading attackers honestly if you have the spare resources.
Unfortunately, I do not have spare ressources. .
But now i focus on my beloved attackers, as the local gym scene does not cry for 3000+ Defenders.
Jolteon and Cloyster are impatiently waiting for some stardust.
I have only one maxed defender: A Co-SeB-Exeggutor at 27xxCP.
I understand you. If not for the expected gym overhaul I would not have over 1000 stardust at the start of any day :). But now I have 372k and invest only on Tyra as he finds his candies.
Ah, I just maxed my big Blissey (instead of leveling second one above lvl 30), that is fun, you leave her 3091 CP in a gym, see the fighting fire and after 2-3 minutes you see the prestige at the exact same value :).
But I do fight with 3 maxed or almost maxed pokes: my hp vape (my highest one, but he fight, the gyms are for big WP and AT ones), my DT/H Dragonite, my low IV Db/Dc.
For now the others don't give me fears, I don't really expect them to go all the time through 2 defenders, what I will use my generalists for? :).
is about being high level too, not only about CP, this is why there is good prestigers, they are high level but low CP
that is why powering up attackers is also good, especially those ones with great movesets, no matter if it has iv 0, its about being high level, iv will only matter for gym placement
As more and more people get to a higher level, where they gain a lot more stardust between levels this is indeed becoming a viable option for a much greater % of the player base. This is part of the changing 'meta' as a larger portion of the player base reach the higher levels.
The massive difference in catch/hatch quantities it takes to go from one level to another leaves people with more resources such as dust and candies than they do at lower levels.
Of course it costs more to 'train' a mon when at higher levels, but the proportion of dust it takes in comparison to the amount earned between levels is vastly different - so players at higher levels have more resources to use, before they need to concentrate solely on defenders after levelling.
The suggestion to take attackers only to level30 is still valid for players in the lower 30's...where the return on investment is not noticable for attackers, and resources are more scarce.
However, once players get to mid or higher 30s then the resources are available to a player to use on attackers - and the difference is enough to make a noticable performance improvement.
It is not that the advice once given is inaccurate - it is that the advice is valid for specific player levels...and changes as you get to a higher level, based on resources available and the return you get for the investment of those resources.
TL/DR What is good advice for a player at lvl32/34 is different to what constitues good advice for a player at lvl35+.
