Lucky Pokemon NOT guaranteed???

So I just tried out the new "lucky trade" update with a couple friends. I followed all the requirements (friend has less than 10 lucky pokemon, we took turns trading July-Aug 2016 pokemon) First 6 trades went through and all 6 pokemon were lucky.

On the 7th trade, I traded a July 2016 pokemon for one of his 2018 pokemon and the results were NOT LUCKY. (Note that my friend still only has 7 lucky pokemon before this trade) This was essentially the same trade as the second one we made as I traded a 2016 for one of his 2018s and they turned lucky so there was no reason this shouldn't have been lucky.

Is there a limit to how many Lucky pokemon you can receive from one friend or is it a daily limit thing?

Do you have 10+ lucky Pokemon? The mobile update is vague, but the Go Live website spells it out more clearly:

"If you and your friend have received 10 or more Lucky Pokémon, the guarantee won’t be in effect, so keep that in mind!"

Key word is "and". From what it sounds like to me, both players need to be below 10 luckies.

I would actually interpret that differently.
"AND" Would imply both that if BOTH players have more than 10 lucky your not guaranteed.

Otherwise it should be worded:

"If you OR your friend have received 10 or more Lucky Pokémon, the guarantee won’t be in effect, so keep that in mind!"

ehh idk maybe just bad wording on their part, wouldnt be the first time.

The SilphRoad reached to Niantic to clarify the matter. This is how it works:

"If BOTH trade partners already have 10 Lucky Pokemon there is no guarantee! ALSO, the 2016 Pokemon must come from a trade partner with <10 Lucky Pokemon.

https://www.reddit.com/r/TheSilphRoad/comments/9dagyk/lucky_pok%C3%A9mon_now_stronger_and_guaranteed_in_some/

So, it is expected. The 2016 pokemon came from your bag. Since you already have more than 10 lucky, there is no guarantee.
In your previous trade, when it happened to work, you where lucky lucky. You simply rolled the dice with the best result even it wasn't guaranteed. Congrats!!

That just might be the case... but I also tried it with 2 other friends where I gave them a 2016 and we all got lucky pokemon. Maybe I'm just that lucky?

You might, indeed.
It sort of makes sense. According to the yet unreleased SilphRoad's research, pokemon from 2016 actually have a higher chance to become lucky.
